Raleigh, N.C. - In a battle between top-25 teams, the 12th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team emerged victorious over 21st-ranked NC State in Raleigh on Wednesday afternoon, 5-2.

The match was the ACC opener for the both teams. Wake Forest improved its season record to 13-1 while the Wolfpack slipped to 15-3.

Senior All-American Todd Paul got back on the winning track with a straight-set victory over 38th-ranked Nick Cavaday, 6-3, 6-3.

Sophomore Cory Parr extended his team-best winning streak to eight matches with a 6-1, 7-6 win at the number two position.

At number four, senior Andrew Hamar won his fourth straight, a 6-1, 7-5 decision against Andre Iriarte.

Wake Forest's freshmen at the bottom of the lineup, Steven Forman and Jason Morgenstern, both dropped their first-ever sets in ACC dual play. But both also rallied to post three-set victories. The rookies are a combined 24-4 during the spring season and Morgenstern has won seven in a row.

NC State captured the doubles point, but the Deacons quelled the momentum by taking five of the six singles matches. Wake Forest's lone singles defeat came at number three where the Wolfpack's William Noblitt outlasted Mariusz Adamski, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (13-11).

The Deacons return to Winston-Salem for an important weekend. Virginia Tech, ranked 35th nationally, comes to Leighton Stadium at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Third-ranked Virginia invades on Sunday at noon. The Cavaliers ousted the Deacons from the 2006 NCAA Tournament in the second round.
