Deacons Tied For Third After Hootie Round One

AWANDAW, S.C. -- Defending champion Wake Forest used a team effort to post a 1-under par score in Sunday's first round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate. The Demon Deacons are tied for third place, trailing a pair of Florida schools with 36 h oles remaining.
Central Florida bolted out to the team lead after shooting a collective 14-under today. Florida State is four strokes back at 10-under par. Wake Forest and Baylor, both 1-under, are the only other teams in the 15-team field under par through 18 holes.
The final 36 holes will be played Monday and Tuesday at the par 71, 7,261-yard Bulls Bay Golf Club.
Wake Forest, ranked 24th nationally, is trying to repeat as team champion.
Senior Sean Moore and sophomore Dustin Groves led a balanced Deacon attack in the first round with 1-under par 70s. Moore had five birdies and four bogies in his round. Four Wake Forest players shot between 1-under and 1-over.
Freshman Brendan Gielow shot even par Sunday and junior Webb Simpson shot a 1-over 72. Junior Chris McCartin's score of 6-over 77 did not count toward the team score.
Players from Central Florida and Florida State hold down the top five spots.
UCF's Preston Brown and Greg Forest are tied for first in the individual race after both players shot a 5-under 66. Three players are one shot back at 4-under.
