AWENDAW, S.C. -- In college golf, five players comprise each school's team. For Wake Forest to win the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate for the second straight year, as it did today, it took solid efforts from all five Demon Deacons.
Sean Moore, Chris McCartin and Brendan Gielow all birdied the third hole of a sudden death playoff with Baylor, giving the 24th-ranked Deacons the tournament crown. The Deacons and Bears finished the three-day, 54-hole event tied at 12-under par. The two teams tied the first two holes of a playoff before Wake wrapped up its first team title of 2006-07 on hole No. 57.
Wake Forest would have never reached the playoff if not for some superb individual efforts. Junior Webb Simpson shot a sizzling 5-under par 66 on the final 18 holes. The Raleigh (N.C.) native finished the tournament at Bulls Bay Golf Club with a 7-under 206 and second place in the individual race. Simpson, one of the nation's top amateurs, finished in second place for the fifth time in h is career.
Sophomore Dustin Groves, who led the Deacons through rounds one and two, joined Gielow, his freshman teammate, in a tie for 13th place at 1-under par for the tournament. Moore finished in 22nd place with a 1-over 214. McCartin battled back from an opening-round 77 with a 73 on Monday and a 2-under 69 on Tuesday to finish with a 6-over 219.
The win was Wake Forest's first since claiming the NCAA East Regional last spring.
Florida State finished five shots back at 7-under par, giving the ACC two of the top three finishes. Central Florida, which led after rounds one and two, finished fourth at 6-under par. The remainder of the 15-team field, including five nationally-ranked teams, shot over-par.
Simpson came within a shot of his career-low score and his first career college tournament title. His round of 66 on Tuesday included six birdies. Over his last 36 holes, Simpson produced just one bogey.
Simpson and Central Florida's Greg Forest finished tied for second place with scores of 7-under. Both players finished one stroke behind Augusta State's Wallace Booth, who fired a 65 Tuesday and finished 8-under for the tournament.
Wake Forest has just one regular season tournament remaining -- April 9-11 at the U.S. Collegiate Championship in Georgia -- before embarking on the ACC Tournament.
