Winston-Salem, N.C. - Senior Andrew Hamar and freshman Jason Morgenstern capped an emotional, historic 4-3 marathon victory against 33rd-ranked Miami on Friday night at Leighton Tennis Stadium. The win marked the Deacons' 20th of the season, a new program record.
Wake Forest trailed 3-2 with Hamar up a set and Morgenstern down a set. The two matches, being played side-by-side, would eventually move into a third and decisive frame in front of a highly partisan Deacon crowd. Morgenstern finished first, dusting his opponent, 6-2. Hamar followed suit, winning 6-1 in the third, to clinch the team win. Hamar's match lasted a full three hours and started more than an hour ahead of Morgenstern's.
Freshman Steven Forman captured the first singles victory of the evening, earning a win at number four, 6-3, 7-5.
It took four hours and five minutes, but Wake Forest (20-4, 7-3 ACC) locked up a first-round bye in next week's ACC Tournament. The 20 team victories surpass the previous record of 19 wins set by the 1976 and 1980 Deacons.
Wake Forest won the doubles point against Miami (10-11, 5-5 ACC), highlighted by a 8-6 upset win by 29th-ranked Mariusz Adamski and Todd Paul against eighth-ranked Luigi D'Agord and Josh Cohen.
In singles, D'Agord exacted revenge against Paul. The Miami senior, ranked 20th, remained undefeated in his ACC career with a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Paul. At number two, Miami's Daniel Vallverdu beat Cory Parr, 6-4, 7-6 in a battle of two players ranked in the 50's. Cohen defeated Mariusz Adamski at number three, 6-0, 6-2.
With the win, Wake Forest clinched a first round bye in next week's ACC Tournament. A win on Sunday against Florida State or a Duke loss at Virginia Tech would give Wake Forest the number three seed. The Deacons can finish no worse than fourth.
The Deacons close the regular season schedule at home Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against the 25th-ranked Seminoles.
