ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- Wake Forest's golf schedule, ranked as the nation's fifth-most difficult by GolfWeek, only gets more difficult next week. The 19th-ranked Demon Deacons will compete against the nation's top teams Monday through Wednesday at the U.S. Collegiate Championship.
The 54-hole event, which will be played at the award-winning Lakeside course, could be a preview of the NCAA Championship later this spring. No. 1-ranked Georgia, defending NCAA champion Oklahoma State and defending U.S. Collegiate champion Clemson headline the 15-team field. Among the other teams competing in the second annual event will be third-ranked Alabama, sixth-ranked Southern California and ninth-ranked UCLA.
The top five ranked individual players in the country will compete in the USCC - No. 1 Rhys Davies of East Tennessee State, No. 2 Jamie Lovemark of Southern Cal, Billy Horschel (3) of Florida and Georgia's Brian Harman (4) and Chris Kirk (5).
One of the nation's hottest players, however, is Wake Forest junior Webb Simpson. Two weeks ago Simpson finished second individually and led the Deacons to a first-place finish at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate. A few days later, Simpson captured the prestigious Azalea Amateur.
Also representing Wake Forest next week will be sophomore Dustin Groves and freshman Brendan Gielow, who shared 13th place at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate with 1-under par totals. Senior Sean Moore and junior Chris McCartin round out the Demon Deacon lineup for next week.
The U.S. Collegiate Championship is Wake Forest's final tune-up before the April 20-22 ACC Championship at Uwharrie Pointe, N.C.
