The first in a series of blogs written by sophomore Dustin Groves, a key member of the Demon Deacon golf team. Wake Forest is participating Thursday through Saturday at the NCAA West Regional in Tempe, Ariz. The top 10 teams will advance to the NCAA Championships later this month in Williamsburg, Va. Groves gives a behind-the-scenes look at traveling with the Deacons.
Hi. My name is Dustin Groves and I am a redshirt sophmore on the Wake Forest golf team. This week I will be doing my best to keep Deacon fans informed about how the team is doing, while also giving some behind-the-scenes information.
Our day (Tuesday) began bright and early this morning when we departed from the golf center at about 5:30 a.m. On our way to the airport we stopped at Biscutville, where Sean Moore (senior) ordered his normal #2 Ultimate Double Bacon combo with a HUGE sweet tea. With Sean barely being able to move after his breakfast and the rest of the team still half alseep, we sluggishly boarded a puddlejumper that took us from Greensboro to Charlotte. From Charlotte we flew to Phoenix, where we will be playing the NCAA West Regional this coming week.
When we arrived in Phoenix, everyone was starving. We stopped at the famous west coast fast food joint, In-n-Out Burger. After lunch we headed over to the Arizona Country Club where we were able to practice and play a fabulous golf course.
Webb Simpson (junior) especially liked the course. Webb shot 59 (13 under par) and set the new course record. Needless to say, Webb and Chris McCartin (junior) beat Sean and myself in a friendly match. However everyone played well. Sean had 67 (5 under) while Chris and I brought up the rear with 69's.
After golf we headed to our hotel, where we checked in and got cleaned up. We met the fifth member of our team, Brenden Gielow (freshman), who flew in from Michigan, and headed to dinner. We had a very good dinner, where we recalled the best and worst shots from the entire season.
Webb made the entire table laugh when he described his worst shot of the season. It happened during the fall at The Carpet Capital in Dalton, GA. He said his head dipped so far, his right ear grazed the grass and his ball hooked deep into the trees.
Well, we have all had a long day and it is time for us to get some sleep and prepare for our practice round tomorrow. Untill then...
Prediction - With Amare out... Spurs 111 Suns 98
