Indianapolis, Ind. - The Wake Forest men's tennis team is seeking a trip to the Sweet 16 in Athens, Ga. Two Demon Deacons, though, punched their tickets on Wednesday when Todd Paul and Mariusz Adamski were selected to 32-team doubles field and Paul was chosen to compete in the 64-player singles field, the NCAA announced.
For Paul, it is his second straight appearance in the NCAA singles event. Adamski and Paul are the first Deacon doubles team to be selected to the championships since Myles Clouston and Raul Munoz in 1999.
The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 23-28 at Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, hosted by the University of Georgia, following the conclusion of the team championship which will take place May 17-22.
Paul (32-7), currently ranked 10th nationally, will be a No. 9-16 seed, meaning he would not play a top 16 player until at least the round of 16. The native of Stamford, Conn., reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season. His 107 career singles wins are the most in Wake Forest history and earlier this year, Paul was ranked as the number one player in college tennis.
Adamski and Paul, currently ranked ninth, just missed earning a seed in the tournament. Only the nation's top eight doubles pairs earn that right. Adamski and Paul are 18-8 since joining together this spring, including a 5-2 mark against nationally-ranked opponents. Their best win of the regular season came against a University of Virginia pair who is the No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament.
As a team, the Deacons begin their NCAA Tournament quest next Friday, May 11 at 11:00 a.m. against Charlotte in the first round. Wake Forest is hosting a first and second round site on campus at the Upper Eight Courts.
