ATHENS, Ga. -- Todd Paul and Mariusz Adamski have returned to Athens, Ga., for the individual portion of the NCAA Tennis Championships. The pair was selected to the doubles field and Paul to the singles field three weeks ago. On Tuesday, the draw revealed their opponents.
In singles, Paul is seeded No. 9-16 and will face 24th-ranked Ken Skupski, a senior from LSU, in the round of 64 on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. Paul is making his second straight appearance in the NCAA singles event. Currently ranked 10th nationally, Paul (32-8) reached in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year.
Skupski has played number one for the Tigers since he arrived as a freshman four years ago from Liverpool, England. Skupski owns a season record of 22-15, including a 12-10 mark in dual matches and 12-13 against nationally-ranked opponents. This is his fourth and final NCAA Tournament.
Adamski and Paul will face Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala, a pair of Texas Longhorn freshmen, in the first round on Thursday. A start time has not been established.
Adamski and Paul are the first Deacon doubles team to be selected to the championships since Myles Clouston and Raul Munoz in 1999.
Adamski and Paul, currently ranked ninth, were not originally expected to be seeded in the tournament. However, Duke's team of Joey Atas and David Goulet were forced to withdraw because of an severe ankle injury to Goulet. That allowed the Deacons to take their place.
Adamski and Paul are 19-9 since joining together this spring, including a 5-3 mark against nationally-ranked opponents. Their best win of the regular season came against a University of Virginia pair who is the No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament. Last week during the team competition in Athens, the same Virginia team edged the Deacons 9-8 (7-5).
The Texas team of Kutrovsky and Zavala is 18-10 this year, including a 15-7 mark at number one doubles. They finished the year as the Big 12's top doubles team, going 5-1 in conference play.
The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 23-28 at Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., hosted by the University of Georgia. The action can be followed live on Georgia's website, georgiadogs.com, which features live, point-by-point scoring and streaming video on six of the 12 available outdoor courts.
