Deacon Golfers Prepare for First Tournament of the Season

W - The Wake Forest men's golf team, ranked 23rd in the nation in the Golf World/Nike preseason poll, will start the 2007-08 season by participating in the Carpet Capital Collegiate Golf Tournament starting on Friday, Sept. 14 at The Farm in Rocky Face, Ga. Play starts Friday morning and will continue through Sunday's final round of the 54-hole event. Other top contenders include second-ranked Alabama, no. 3 Georgia, no. 4 Florida, eighth-ranked Georgia Tech and ninth-ranked Clemson. The Crimson Tide won last year's tournament with a score of 23-under 841. Wake Forest finished 11th at four-over 864. The Deacons finished second at the Carpet Capital tournament in 2004. This week's line-up will be without Webb Simpson who recently returned from playing for the United States in the Walker Cub in Ireland. Simpson is under the weather and will take this weekend off before re-joining the line-up for the VCU Shootout on Oct. 1. Simpson is the third-ranked collegiate men's player according to the GolfWorld.com College Preview. Wake Forest will be led by sophomore Brendan Gielow whose last tournament was the U.S. Amateur last month. Gielow finished third at the Carpet Capital last year with an eight-under 208. Wake Forest will also send junior Dustin Groves, senior Chris McCartin and sophomores Travis Wadkins and Preston Yates to the tournament.
