Parr, Forman Advance to Semifinals at Southern Intercollegiates

ATHENS, Ga. - The Wake Forest men's tennis team had a successful weekend at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Juniors Cory Parr and Carlos Salmon, sophomores Andrew Brasseaux, Steven Forman and Jason Morgenstern and freshman Jonathan Wolff all participated in this weekend's championship.
Parr and Forman both advanced to the Division I singles semifinals after winning four matches.
Seeded seventh in the tournament, Parr defeated Brad Cox of Kentucky 6-4, 6-3 in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. Parr followed up with an easy 6-2, 6-3 win over Reid Carleton of Duke and knocked out Nicholas Delgado of Virginia Tech in the round of 16. Parr was leading 6-2, 2-1 over Delgado when the Hokie retired due to injury. Parr advanced to the semifinal round after defeating Austen Childs in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1. Fifth-seeded Phillip Frayssinoux of Mississippi State ended Parr's run with a 7-5, 6-2 win.
After a first-round bye, Forman defeated Michael Nusslein of South Florida 6-3, 6-4 and defeated Sandy Franz of USC-Upstate 7-5, 6-2 to move into the round of 16. With a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Kentucky's Will Ward and a 6-4 straight set victory over Christian Vitulli of Georgia in the quarterfinals, Forman found himself in the semifinals along with teammate Parr. Facing ninth-seeded Nate Schnugg of Georgia, Parr took the first set 6-2, but the Bulldog came back with a 6-1 second-set win. Schnugg squeaked by with a 7-6 (5) in the tiebreaker to advance to the finals.
Brasseaux defeated Amrit Narasimhan of Memphis 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, but fell to Schnugg 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 32. Despite falling 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the first round to ETSU's Enrique Olivares, Morgenstern fared well in the consolation bracket. He defeated Morgan Richard of MTSU 6-2, 6-2 and Mike Boyer of Charleston 6-4, 2-6, 10-7.
Playing in Division II singles, Wolff advanced to the round of 16. The newcomer first picked up a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 win over Louiville's Viktor Maksimuck and followed with a straight 6-2 win over South Florida's Thomas Estrada. Georgia's Josh Varela, who eventually advanced to the finals, defeated Wolff 6-3, 6-5.
Salmon fell in the round of 64 to RJ Nagel 6-2, 6-1, but won his two matches in consolations. Salmon defeated Florida's Eric Corace 6-3, 6-5 and Carlos Abalos of Samford 6-4, 1-6, 11-9.
In doubles, Salmon teamed up with Parr and defeated Tennessee's Brewer and Tweedt 8-1, but fell to MTSU's Nowak and Peters 8-6 in the round of 16. Brasseaux and Forman also fell to a Middle Tennessee State duo, losing 8-6 to Richard and Rocafort.
Wake Forest is back in action at the end of the month when it travels to Tulsa, Okla. for the ITA All-American Championships.
