WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team dropped its conference opener to No. 5 Maryland with an 83-49 loss on Thursday evening at the Joel Coliseum.
The win snapped the three-game Demon Deacon winning streak and set the season record to 12-3. Maryland improved to 17-1 and notched its seventh consecutive win.
Freshman Camille Collier was the leading WFU scorer, putting up ten points, while Alex Tchangoue had a team-high eight rebounds. UM's Laura Harper, Crystal Langhorne and Kristi Toliver all scored a game-high 15 points. Langhorne had the only double-double of the night with ten rebounds.
The Deacons, who had been averaging 13 assists per game, only had four during the contest to Maryland's 20 assists. Wake won the turnover battle with 17 to UM's 20, but UM scored 24 points off WFU's fumbles to Wake's 13 points off Maryland slip-ups.
Maryland charged out to an 18-2 lead in the opening minutes, capitalizing on Wake Forest's 20 percent first half shooting. The Deacs were only able to tally 13 points during the first half and pulled just 13 rebounds to the Terps' 31.
Wake Forest regrouped to tie Maryland in scoring during the second half, with each team netting 36 points. Corinne Groves and Alex Tchangoue opened the final 20 minutes with back-to-back baskets, cutting the Maryland advantage to 30 (17-47).
The Deacs outscored the Terps in second chance points, scoring 13 to UM's 6. The teams also tied in points in the paint (14) and were neck and neck with points off turnovers (UM 9, WFU 7). Despite the comeback, the Deacons' first half deficit was too much to overcome and Terps finished the game with a 34 point advantage.
The Deacons will have two days to regroup before they return to the Joel to host Virginia on Sunday at 2 p.m.
