MACON, Ga. - Freshman Daniel Meggs carded his second 70 of the tournament to lead the Wake Forest men's golf team to a 289 and a tenth place finish at the Brickyard Collegiate Championship at The Brickyard at Riverside.
Meggs' 54-hole total of 216 is his lowest in three starts this season and he picked up his first top-ten finish.
For the third straight day, the Demon Deacons got off to a slow start, posting 7-over on their opening nine. But a total of 11 birdies on the second nine gave the team a 2-over total on the front side for a round of 9-over 283.
"We played a lot better today obviously, but we just need to find a way to play better when the conditions are tough," said head coach Jerry Haas. "The rough was brutal and we were in it too much and because of that, we didn't have enough scoring chances."
"Overall, the guys never gave up though," Haas continued. "They came back with a better round today but they still aren't happy, which is a good thing, because they all know they could have played better."
After making two birdies and posting a 1-under 34 on the back nine, Meggs contributed two more birdies on the front nine but a bogie on one and a double on three evened his round.
Junior Brendan Gielow turned in a 3-over 38 on the back nine but posted three birdies, three pars and three bogies on the front for a 35 and a final round 3-over 73. Gielow came into the round tied for 8th at 4-over par and wound up finishing tied for 13th.
Coming into the final round, freshman junior Travis Wadkins, freshman Lee Bedford and senior Dustin Groves were all tied for 53rd with 36-hole totals of 153. All three players went on to card their lowest rounds of tournament on Monday.
Wadkins birdied his first hole of the day but four bogies in five holes gave him a first nine total of 3-over 38. He then bogied No. 1 to move to four over but back-to-back birdies on holes six and seven brought him home in 1-under 34 for a final round 72. He finished tied for 46th with a three-day total of 225.
Groves made three bogies on his opening nine but he responded with a pair of birdies on the front nine to card a round a 74. Bedford also made two birdies on his second nine and like Groves, he too posted a final round 74. Both players finished the tournament tied for 54th.
The course played tough all weekend as not one team posted an under par round. In fact, just 12 of the 81 players recorded a sub-70 round and no one broke par for the tournament.
Georgia came into the final round tied with both Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech but a final round 282, which was tied for the lowest round in the tournament, allowed the Bulldogs to win the team title by five shots over Georgia Tech.
First round leader Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech carded his second under-par of the tournament on Monday, a 1-under 69 to take medalist honors at 1-over par. He held of Virginia Tech's Drew Weaver, who finished at 2-over.
The Deacons will wrap up the fall portion of the schedule at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges on Oct. 24-26.
"It's hard to believe we only have one tournament left this fall but the guys are looking forward to it," said Haas. "We always seem to play well at The Ridges and it will be good to go into the spring on a good note."
Juniors Marc Gladson, Preston Yates and sophomore Justin Bryant were also in action at the Duke Individual Collegiate presented by Coca-Cola at the Washington Duke Golf Club in Durham, N.C. on Monday.
The first two rounds of the 54-hole tournament were played on Monday with the final round set for Tuesday.
After struggling to an 83 in the first round, Yates rebounded with three birdies and just one bogie in the afternoon for a career-low 2-under 69. Yates' round was the lowest score of the day and moved him from tied for 57th after the first round to tied for 22nd after 36 holes.
Gladson is one-shot behind Yates after rounds of 80 and 73. He made a total of four birdies on the day including birdying the 167-yard par-3 12th hole both times he played it.
Bryant also made a total of four birdies on the day and finished with rounds of 81 and 77.
The final round of the Duke Individual will begin Tuesday morning and can be followed with live scoring from Golfstat.
