WILMINGTON, N.C. - On a day when the rest of the field went backwards, the No. 9 Wake Forest women's golf team carded its lowest round of the season to open up a commanding 25-shot lead after 36 holes of the Landfall Tradition at Landfall Country Club.
All five lady Deacs are in the top-five as freshman Cheyenne Woods tied a season-low with a 1-under 71 to lead teammate Natalie Sheary by one-shot at 2-over par.
Sheary carded a 75 on Saturday and stands at 3-over while junior Dolores White carded a season-low 73 to sit tied for 3rd at 4-over.
Senior's Jean Chua and Nannette Hill are one shot behind White at 5-over and are tied for fifth with a round to go.
The Demon Deacons carded a season-low even-par round of 288 Saturday, which is also tied for the 9th lowest round in school history.
Wake entered the round with a six-shot lead and through three holes, it extended the cushion to nine. Ohio State would cut the lead to just five-shots through six holes but the Deacs closed the front nine strong and would turn at 1-over and hold an 11-shot lead.
Despite some rough weather conditions, the Deacs kept the pedal to the metal and would go three-under through the first three holes on the back nine to open up a 17-shot lead.
Wake would only give two shots back the final six holes and will take a whopping 25-shot lead into Sunday's final round.
Woods made one birdie and one bogie on the front to turn at even par. She would then birdie ten but bogie 13 to fall back to even. A final birdie on No. 18 gave her a round of 71 and she will have the lead for the first time in her young career.
Chua rebounded after a tough first round to post three birdies and just one bogie in her second round to card her second 2-under par 70 of the season. She started the round seven shots back and is now just three shots down heading into the final round.
White birdied No. 3 and No. 4 but a pair of bogies on No 6 and No. 8 gave her an even 36 on the front side. She would play a steady back nine to post a season-low 1-over 73.
Hill made a birdie and three bogies on her front nine but rebounded with nine straight pars on the back nine to card a second round 74.
Sheary was slowed by a couple of double bogies on Saturday but a steady 13 pars and two birdies gave her a round of 75 and she is just one shot behind Woods with a round to play.
Amber Littman of East Carolina has carded a pair of 74s and is the lone non-Demon Deacon at the top of the leaderboard.
Wake is trying to make it two wins in a row at the Landfall as the Deacs pulled out a nine-shot victory in 2007. Hill also picked up her first collegiate medalist honors as the Landfall last season.
The Demon Deacons are also looking for its second straight win as the Lady Deacs also dominated the Lady Tar Heel back on Oct. 3-5, winning by 16 shots.
The field is being paired into foursomes for Sunday's final round, which is scheduled to begin with an 8:30 shotgun.
