Demon Deacons Fourth After First Round at Intercollegiate

The Wake Forest men's golf team is in fourth place and Webb Simpson is tied for the individual lead after the first round of the River Landing Intercollegiate in Wallace, N.C.
The Deacs' 287 in the first round puts them three strokes behind co-leaders Duke and Florida State, which carded four-under 284s. Wake's first round was the ninth best round as a team on the season.
Simpson carded a five-under 67 Friday, his best round since a 64 the third round of the Western Refining All-America Classic, an event the senior won in November. Simpson's first round total ties for the fifth best of the year for the Deacs.
Simpson, a native of Raleigh, is tied for first with North Carolina's Kevin O'Connell heading into Saturday's second round.
Travis Wadkins is tied for 14th after posting an even-par 72. The sophomore has not recorded a top 20 finish on the season.
Brendan Gielow recorded a one-over 73 and is currently tied for 25th place. The sophomore recorded one birdie on the day; it came on hole two of the par-72, 7,112-yard River Landing Course.
Chris McCartin, one of two current Deacon golfers who have played the Intercollegiate, is tied for 39th place. The senior recorded a three-over 75, about one an a half strokes off is 18-hole average of 73.4
Simpson is the other Deacon golfer to have played the Intercollegiate in his career.
Junior Dustin Groves posted a four-over 76 to land in a tie for 49th place.
Freshman Justin Bryant, competing as an individual, is tied for 78th following an eight-over 80 in Friday's first round.
Tee times were delayed 90 minutes Friday morning due to heavy fog in the Wallace area. The Deacs teed-off at 9:30 a.m. instead of the originally scheduled 8:00 a.m. tee time.
Wake is trying for its second team victory of the season and its fourth top five finish on the year.
Weather.com is projecting a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms in the Wallace area for Saturday afternoon with a high of 80 degrees.
