The Wake Forest men's golf team matched its first round total with a 287 in the final round of the River Landing Intercollegiate but fell one spot to finish fourth in Wallace, N.C.

The Deacs finished four over par (868) for the tournament.

Webb Simpson and Duke's Michael Schachner were tied at the end of 54 holes in the race for individual honors, but it was Schachner's birdie on the first playoff hole that denied Simpson the win.

The senior missed a 13-foot birdie putt to continue the playoff. Simpson was looking for his first individual victory in a team event on the season. The Raleigh-native shot a two-under 70 Sunday and finished the tournament with a three-day total of 215 (-7).

Simpson's seven-under on the tournament ties for second-best 54-hole score to par for the Deacs on the year. Simpson was seven-under for the Bank of Tennessee at the Ridges in October.

The Deacs have "some work to do" before heading to Uwharrie Point, N.C. for next weekend's ACC Tournament, according to Head Coach Jerry Haas.

"We need to clean it up a little bit," Haas said. "We have to do whatever we can the next few days to get things ready for the ACC Tournament. We were in the top three or four all week. In team golf, there's a thin line between winning and ending up in the middle of the pack."

Justin Bryant continued his hot streak as the freshman posted his second consecutive three-under 69. Bryant finished the tournament tied for 20th competing as an individual. Before this weekend, Bryant's previous low round was a 73 in the final round of the General Jim Hackler Championship in March.

Travis Wadkins recorded his first top 20 finish of the year for the Deacs and the second of his career. The sophomore carded a two-under 70 Sunday on the par-72, 7,112-yard River Landing Golf Course. Wadkins finished the weekend with a one-over 217, one off his career best.

Dustin Groves ended tied for 45th after a one-over 73. The junior posted a three-round total of 223 to finish seven over par.

Chris McCartin joined Groves in 45th after shooting a two-over 74 in the final round. The senior entered Sunday tied for 33rd.

Brendan Gielow posted a five-over 77 to finish tied for 52nd. The sophomore carded a three-day total of 224 (+8). The Deacs will return to Winston-Salem for two days before departing Wednesday for the ACC Championship at the Old North State Golf Course. Wake will have a practice round Thursday before trying for its 19th conference title.

"We've got to get it closer to the hole. We had some mistakes from the fairway, but it's all correctable stuff," Haas said. "Next week is a very similar course to what we just played, so we have an idea of what we're looking at."
