Owen, Russell Post Top 1500m Performances of 2008

PALO ALTO, Calif. - In her first collegiate 5000m run, freshman Anna Nosenko punched her ticket to the NCAA Regionals with a qualifying time of 16:38.16 at the Stanford Invitational. The mark was good for 20th place amongst the meet's national field of top competitors.

Other Demon Deacons who've set regional marks this season include Michelle Loyd (400m hurdles), Carly Mauch (Javelin), Caroline Vaughn (100m hurdles) and Kerry Major (100m).

Matthew Owen and Mark Russell ran the two fastest 1500m times of the season. Owen tied his personal best with a 3:52.72 run, while Russell posted a 3:55.78. The younger member of the Russell family, Patrick, also had a powerful mid distance performance, topping his former 14:55 3000m mark with a 14:47.27 run in Palo Alto.

Wrapping up the distance portion of the Stanford Invitational was senior Caitlin Chrisman, who finished 18th in the 10000m run with a 36:05.49 performance.

On the opposite side of the country, other Demon Deacon track and field members competed in a rainy Duke Invitational.

In Durham, Jill Ahrens continued to make her mark in Wake Forest pole vault history, setting a new program best with a 12-03.50 performance and a fourth place finish in the event. At the ACC Indoor Championships earlier this season, Ahrens set the previous high Wake Forest mark at 12-01.50.

In his first 400m race this season, Phillip Warsaw posted the fourth fastest time of the season for the Deacons, clocking a 49.07 performance. In the 400m hurdles, Warsaw finished in 52.54, just over his personal record of 51.60.

After just missing a spot in the 100m dash finals with a 12.44 mark, Nicole Castronuova followed with a first place finish in the 200m dash, finishing in 24.35 seconds.

Katherine Sinacore tied her own record of 2:20 in her first 800m of the year, good for the third best Demon Deacon performance in the event for the 2008 outdoor season. The Darien, Conn. Native also ran a personal season best of 4:48.12 in the 1500m run.

Whitney Curry posted the fasted 3000m mark for the Demon Deacons this season, running the event in 10:10.11, smashing her previous high mark of 10:34.58. and finishing sixth overall.

The Demon Deacons will travel to Athens, Ga. for their final before the ACC Outdoor Championships April 17-19 at the Georgia Tech campus.
