WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The top-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team will hit the road for the first time this season, taking on Ohio at the University of Virginia on Saturday and Davidson College in Davidson, N.C. on Sunday.
Earlier this week the Demon Deacons (6-0, 1-0) moved to the top of the national rankings, marking the first time Jennifer Averill's squad has been ranked No. 1 since the end of the 2006 season. The team climbed to the top just before the ACC Tournament that year, where the team took the conference title and advanced to the championship match of the NCAA tournament.
The Ohio Bobcats (2-3) were in Winston-Salem last weekend, taking on Indiana at Wake Forest's Kentner Staidum. Ohio pulled out an exciting 2-1 double overtime win over the Hoosiers, with goals scored by seniors Estienne Coetzee and Nikki Gnozzio.
Bobcat head coach Neil Macmillan was an assistant coach for the Demon Deacons for six seasons (1999-2004).
Davidson (2-4) dropped two matches last weekend on the road, falling 5-2 to Longwood and 3-0 to Towson. The Wildcats are undefeated at home (2-0), taking wins over VCU and Georgetown on September 6 and 5.
Following the road matches, Wake Forest will be back at Kentner stadium to host No. 2 Maryland on Saturday, September 27. The match will be played a 12 p.m., an hour earlier than originally scheduled.
