WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After a top-ten finish in its first tournament of the season, the Wake Forest men's golf team will get back to action at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 22-23.
The first two rounds will be played on Monday with the third and final round played on Tuesday.
Five teams ranked among the nation's top 30 in Golfweek's preseason rankings, including the Deacons ranked15th, will meet in Birmingham, Ala., at the famed Shoal Creek.
This is the fourth annual Intercollegiate and with 10 of the 12 teams competing ranked in last year's top 75, this year's edition has the potential to be one of the most competitive events yet.
Last season, Texas Tech captured the team title by making birdies on the final two holes to edge out the tournament hosts UAB. Both teams return to try to repeat its success this season.
Wake will be one of four teams making its first appearance at the Intercollegiate. Baylor, Tulsa and East Tennessee State will also be teeing it up for the time at Shoal Creek.
The Deacons lineup will once again be headed by senior Dustin Groves and junior Brendan Gielow.
Groves carded a pair of 1-under 71s in the first two rounds of the Carpet Capital and wound up finishing as the low Deacon at tied for 13th. Gielow finished tied for 33rd in the opening tournament of the year.
Redshirt junior Marc Gladson will play in the third spot this week. After a knee injury forced him to take a medical redshirt last season, Gladson will be playing in his first tournament since April 2-3, 2007, at the Belmont Intercollegiate where he carded a career-low 67.
Freshmen Daniel Meggs and Lee Bedford will round out the Demon Deacon five. Both players will be playing in their second straight tournaments.
Meggs had an up-and-down weekend at the Carpet Capital, carding a 77 in the opening round but bouncing-back with a 1-under 71 in the second.
Bedford was steady all weekend, posting rounds of 75-75-74 to finish tied for 49th. His round was counted all three days.
Wake will tee-off the front nine beginning at 8:15 a.m. Monday morning. The Deacons are paired with Auburn and host Alabama-Birmingham.
