GREENSBORO, N.C. - The women's team came in fourth at the Hagan Stone Park Cross Country Classic on Saturday with 119 points. The top finisher for the Demon Deacons in the 5-kilometer event was sophomore Katy Swain, who finished the course in 19:49.5 for 27th-overall place in a field of 99 runners. The men's squad did not field a full team but three student-athletes ran individually, with freshman Jake Graham pacing Wake Forest in the 8K with a time of 27:29.3 and a 15th-overall finish out of 88 runners.
Finishing 32nd and 34th overall, junior Cristina Richard was timed at 20:00.2 and senior Kelly Laffey was impressive for the Deacs with 20:02.3. Freshman Kristen Buchan was 38th overall with a time of 20:09.4, and sophomore Molly Binder completed the course in 20:25.5, good for 44th place.
Rounding out the competing Deacons in the women's race, junior Ellen Huber was 58th with a time of 21:16.2, and junior Chelsea Bolton was 78th with 23:45.5.
For the men, freshman Will Ficklen completed the 8K course in 27:41.5 for 21st-place overall, while freshman Austin Jones was 32nd with a time of 28:19.9.
Duke captured the women's team title with 19 points. With a time of 18:00.3, the Blue Devils' Anna Farias-Eisner took the collegiate individual title at the event.
Liberty won the men's event with 15 points, and the Flames' Sam Chelanga was the individual 8K champion with his time of 24:45.5.
The 2009 Hagan Stone Park Classic boasted more than 1,800 entries in eight races at the all-day event. In the collegiate races, the event was scored by Division. A total of 12 colleges competed in the women's event, with six Division I teams present. In the men's event, there were nine complete teams, including three D-I competitors.
The Deacons will toe the line next on Friday, Oct. 16, when Wake Forest's second unit heads to Boone, N.C., for the Blue Ridge Open. The meet is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. (ET). On Saturday, Oct. 17, Wake Forest's first team will compete in the Indiana State Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind., where the first of six races will begin at 11 a.m. Nearly 100 teams are expected in the men's 8K and women's 6K events.
