Beck's Big Night Leads Wake Past Boston College

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Freshman Andrea Beck finished the night with a match-high 11 kills and hit a season-best .688 to lead the Wake Forest volleyball team to its third-straight win over Boston College Saturday evening in Reynolds Gym.
The three-set victory (25-13, 25-22, 25-19) lifts the Deacons back over the .500 mark in the ACC at 7-6 while it also improves Wake's overall record to 9-15. Boston College falls to 11-13 on the year and 1-12 in the conference.
Beck's 11 kills came on just 16 attempts and for the second time this season, she did not record an error. The Winston-Salem, NC, native also notched a total of three blocks and one assist on the night. For the weekend, Beck averaged 3.71 kills per set and hit a stunning .564. She also averaged 1.00 block per set in the seven sets.
Sophomore outside hitter Kadija Fornah finished the evening with 10 kills and three digs. It was the sixth time in the last nine matches that Fornah has notched 10 or more kills. Fellow sophomore Carlin Salmon recorded nine kills on the night to go along with her match-high five blocks, which included a career-high tying two block solos.
For the second-straight night, junior setter Kelsey Jones had herself a very good match. She dished out 30 assists and tied her career-high with two service aces. She also notched three kills and three digs. In the two matches this weekend, Jones averaged 12.00 assists per set to go along with seven kills.
Defensively, junior libero Megan Thornberry led Wake with 18 digs. She became the fastest Demon Deacon to record 1,200 career digs and now sits third all-time with 1,217. One night after recording her 1,000th career-dig, senior Abby Miller recorded seven digs to go along with one service ace.
Junior outside hitter Kristen White finished the evening with 13 kills, six digs and two blocks. She also had a good two matches this weekend, averaging 3.86 digs per set in the two wins.
Boston College was led by Taylor Williams' 11 kills as middle blocker Melanie Cimino chipped in with nine kills and hit a solid .389. Freshman setter Krissy Mussenden was one dig shy of a double-double, finishing with 27 assists and nine digs and Kristen Baader led the way with a total of 11 digs.
Wake finished the night with 39 kills and a .200 hitting percentage and held the Eagles to just a .077 hitting percentage on 31 kills. The Deacs also recorded eight blocks and 54 digs while the .077 hitting percentage was the second-lowest for a Wake opponent this season.
With the score tied at 9-9 in the first set, Salmon and Jones notched back-to-back kills to spark a 10-2 Deacon run that forced BC to burn both of its timeouts. With the Deacs up 19-11, Fornah added a kill and Jones recorded the first of her two service aces to extend the run to 12-2. After trading sideouts, a block assist from Salmon and White followed by a kill from White would give Wake the first set 25-13.
Beck had four kills and two blocks while Wake totaled five blocks as a team in the set and held BC to a -.091 hitting percentage.
The second set started the same way as the first as both teams traded blows early on until a kill from Cimino came the Eagles a slim 9-8 advantage. But just like the first set, Wake would go on a big run to take control of the set.
A pair of kill from White got the Deacs started and after another Cimino kill, Salmon pounded a kill of her own and Fornah put away two-straight kills to give Wake a 14-10 advanage. The lead swelled to five at 18-13 before back-to-back kills from BC's Morgan Fry-Pasic and Williams forced Wake to call timeout only up three.
The break was just what the Deacs needed as they once again built a five-point lead at 21-16 thanks to a kill from Salmon and a block assist from Salmon and Jones. But after another Eagle timeout, Williams had back-to-back kills and Clare Flood joined in with her own kill to pull BC to within one at 21-20.
A kill from Salmon would stop the Eagles momentum and two more kills from Fornah and Beck would eventually give the Deacons the second set 25-22. Cimino had five of her nine kills in the set while Fornah also added five kills for the Deacs. Thornberry played a great set for Wake, recorded 10 digs in the second-set alone.
The Deacons came out of the locker room and took control of the third set early on. A pair of kills from Beck gave the Deacs a 5-4 lead and they would eventually push the margin to seven at 15-8 before Boston College called its second timeout. The lead grew to eight after a kill from Salmon and would stay that way until the Eagles went on a 5-1 run to close to within four at 23-19. But two-straight kills from Salmon ended the set and the match 25-19 in favor of the Deacons.
Wake improves to 5-0 all-time at home against the Eagles and hold a 15-1 edge in set victories in those matches. The Deacons also sweep the season series with BC for the first time since 2005.
Wake will look to keep the momentum rolling next weekend as it heads to the Sunshine state for a pair of matches against Miami and Florida State. The Deacons will be in Miami on Friday evening for a 7 pm match and then in Tallahassee on Sunday for a 1 pm tilt. Wake fell to both teams earlier this season in Winston-Salem.
