WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - In the men's 110-meter hurdles, junior Brent LaRue came from behind and overtook Daniel Kinney of Howard over the last hurdle to win the event with an NCAA Regional-qualifying time of 14.15 at Kentner Stadium on Saturday afternoon at the Wake Forest Open.

He came into the final with the second-fastest qualifying time of 14.55.

Junior Caroline Vaughn, who set the school record yesterday in the prelims of the 100-meter hurdles, finished second today with a time of 13.60. She broke away from the pack about 40 meters into the race but Landria Buckley from Howard was right on her hip. The two were neck-and-neck down the last 40 meters but Buckley was able to pull ahead at the end.

Vaughn's time today was still lower than her previous school-record time of 13.66, which she held coming into the season.

Fellow junior Alex Gove finished fifth overall in the 100-meter hurdles as she crossed the line with a time of 14.51.

Vaughn then qualified for the NCAA Regionals in her second event this weekend, finishing second behind Buckley in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.12. It was also Vaughn's second event of the weekend in which she set a new personal-best time.

Gove also had a strong finish in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing fourth at 1:01.78.

In the men's 400-meter hurdles, senior Phillip Warsaw was the top collegiate finisher, ultimately finishing second behind Ian Weakly running for Fitrition. Phillip clipped the tape at 52.49, just less than a second behind Weakly.

Three Demon Deacons placed in the top-five of the women's 1,500-meter run led by sophomore Anna Nosenko. Nosenko crossed the line nearly four seconds ahead of the nearest competitor in 4:29.47.

She was followed by her sister Dina Nosenko in fourth at 4:34.64 and senior Merry Placer in fifth at 4:34.72. Placer knocked almost four seconds off her previous personal-best.

Junior Nicole Castronuova finished first of 104 runners in the women's 200-meter race, turning in a time of 23.97, which was just over the NCAA Regional mark of 23.96.

The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Castronuova, Gove, Vaughn and senior Melissa Council captured first place with a combined time of 3:43.83. The first section came down to the final 20 meters when Castronuova overcame Howard's team, which finished second overall with a 3:44.4 time, in the final stretch to give the Deacons another victory at the Wake Forest Open.

After winning the men's 800-meter run yesterday, freshman Thomas Morrison ran a solid first 1,500-meter race of the outdoor season, posting a third-place finish in a time of 3:52.46.

In the women's long jump, Council finished fourth overall with a leap of 18-04.25 while freshman Erin Brooks was right behind her in fifth at 18-01.75.

Junior Thomas Sensing finished fourth in the men's discus throw with a 153-04 toss.

Sophomore Caitlin Crawford finished fifth overall in the women's 3,000-meter run with a personal-best time of 10:22.20, while sophomore Suzie Clinchy placed 13th for the Deacons with a time of 10:47.17 in the event.

Freshman Trey Blanton took seventh in the "A" section of the men's pole vault with a mark of 14-07.25.

In the women's "B" section of the high jump, freshman Samantha Howell took the top spot with a leap of 5-02.25.

In the 200-meter, junior Jon Reid took 10th overall for Wake Forest, finishing with a time of 21.93.
