AWENDAW, S.C. - Junior Travis Wadkins posted a 2-under 69 to lead the Wake Forest men's golf team in the opening round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay in Awendaw S.C., on a very windy Sunday afternoon.
The Demon Deacons carded a round of 9-over 293 and are currently eighth in the 15-team field. Wake is looking for its second-straight victory on the season and its third in the last four seasons at the Hootie.
Wadkins, who has played much better as of late, started the day birdie-bogey-birdie to sit 1-under through three. He then ran off seven-straight pars to finish the back nine, his opening nine, at 1-under 34.
The Dallas, Texas native, then made a birdie at No. 2 and another at No. 7 to climb to 3-under par and despite a bogey on the last, he is tied for third with two other players through 18 holes.
Junior Brendan Gielow and senior Dustin Groves both posted rounds of 3-over 74 on Sunday. Gielow made a pair of birdies on the day while Groves posted one birdie and four bogies.
Freshman Lee Bedford also made a pair of birdies on the day but would settle for a 5-over 76. Classmate Daniel Meggs had a bit of a rocky first round and would post an 81
"We had an alright day today," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "We had a few too many little mistakes and too many three-putts but the wind was very strong and it gave everyone fits on the greens."
"The scores were bunched a bit today so we're right and the guys will come out with a good round tomorrow and we'll be in good shape. We hadn't played in awhile so it was good to get back out there and knock the rust off."
Augusta State, backed by individual leader Janne Kaske's 4-under 67, leads the field after a 2-over 286. Kaske made a bogie on his second hole of the day but then made five birdies and no bogies the rest of the round.
Wake Forest will tee off Monday morning in the first grouping off the front nine at 10 a.m. Live scoring of the final two rounds can be found at www.golfstat.com.
