Deacs Open ACC Play with 18-2 Loss to Virginia

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Virginia scored 18 runs on 20 hits to defeat Wake Forest 18-2 on Friday night in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams. Wake Forest falls to 6-2 on the season and 0-1 in ACC play, while Virginia improves to 10-0 and 1-0 in conference play.
Shane Kroker and Mike Murray each went 1-for-3 at the plate in the game with an RBI. Ryan Semeniuk extended his career-best hitting streak to six games, going 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Virginia's Danny Hultzen improved to 3-0 on the season, allowing two runs on five hits in seven innings while striking out nine. Austin Stadler suffered his first loss of the season, giving up nine runs, six of which were earned, on nine hits.
The Cavaliers were led offensively by Tyler Cannon, who went 5-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs and five runs scored. Phil Gosselin also drove in four runs for Virginia.
Virginia jumped out early, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Jarrett Parker opened the game with a single through the right side and moved to second on a single by Cannon. Gosselin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Dan Grovatt drove in two runs with a double to left field. Gosselin scored and Grovatt moved to third on a passed ball to make the score 3-0. After a strikeout by Steven Proscia, John Barr lined out to the first baseman Evan Ocheltree. Ocheltree attempted to throw out Grovatt at third, but his throw went into the dugout, allowing Grovatt to cross to make the score 4-0.
The Cavaliers extended their lead with two runs in the top of the third. Cannon led off the inning with a home run to right-center field. Gosselin walked and Proscia reached on an infield single to put runners at first and second with one out. Barr reached on a fielding error by third baseman Carlos Lopez, allowing Gosselin to score to stretch the lead to 6-0.
Wake Forest scored its two runs in the game in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Semeniuk singled to left field and moved to second after Dustin Hood walked. A single to left field by Kroker scored Semeniuk to make the score 6-1. Hood advanced to second on the play, but got caught in a run down attempting to go to third for the second out of the inning. Murray singled to right center to score Kroker from second and cut the lead to 6-2.
UVa extended its lead with three runs in the fourth, five runs in the fifth, a run in the sixth and three runs in the top of the eighth.
Junior Alex Wiesner and Mark Adzick came out of the Wake Forest bullpen to throw a scoreless inning of relief.
Wake Forest and Virginia play game two of the series on Saturday at 6 p.m. (ET). Senior right hander Brad Kledzik (Sr., 1-1, 6.14) will take the mound for Wake Forest, while Virginia's Andrew Carraway (Sr., 2-0, 0.68) will throw for the Cavaliers.
