Deacs Fall to Virginia in Series Finale

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshman third baseman Carlos Lopez hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season, but Wake Forest fell 21-5 to Virginia in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
Wake Forest drops to 6-4 and 0-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Virginia improves to 12-0 and 3-0 in ACC play.
Dustin Hood, Shane Kroker, Weldon Woodall and Austin Stadler each had two hits in the game. Lopez drove in a game-high three runs, while Hood added two RBIs. Woodall scored two runs for the Demon Deacons.
UVa's Will Roberts improved his record to 2-0, allowing three runs on seven hits in six innings. Michael Dimock suffered his first loss of the season for the Demon Deacons.
After a scoreless first inning, Virginia took the lead in the top of the second with a single run. John Hicks hit a one-out home run over the left-field fence to make the score 1-0.
Wake Forest came back with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Woodall reached on an infield single. After Stadler grounded out to second base, Lopez hit a 2-1 pitch over the fence in left field for his sixth home run of the season to give the Deacs a 2-1 lead.
Virginia took the lead for good with six runs in the top of the third. Dan Grovatt drove in two runs with a single to right to give UVa a 3-2 lead. Tyler Cannon doubled down the right-field line to score two more runs. A triple by Hicks to left field scored the sixth Virginia run of the game. John Barr reached on an infield single to drive in the sixth run of the inning and give the Cavaliers a 7-2 lead.
After the Cavaliers scored five runs in the top of the fourth, Wake Forest answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Woodall led off the inning with a single to left and Stadler followed with a single to right to send Woodall to third. Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Woodall and make the score 12-3.
Virginia added two runs in the fifth, four runs in the sixth, two runs in the seventh and a run in the eighth to stretch the lead to 21-3.
Wake Forest closed the game with two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Stadler opened the inning with a double to right field. Tyler Smith walked after a Lopez strikeout. Ryan Semeniuk struck out looking for the second out of the inning. Hood drove in two runs on a double to the right-center field gap to make the score 21-5.
Wake Forest is back in action on Tuesday, March 10, at 6 p.m. (ET) traveling to Rock Hill, S.C., to face Winthrop. The Deacs return home to face Elon on Wednesday, March 11 at 6 p.m.
