Wake Forest Falls to High Point, 12-5

HIGH POINT, N.C. - High Point scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back as the Panthers defeated Wake Forest 12-5 on Tuesday night at Williard Stadium.
With the loss, Wake Forest drops back to .500 on the season at 20-20, while High Point improves to 17-19.
The Panthers jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the first as Wake Forest starter Mark Adzick was not able to retire a batter in his first start of the season. The Deacs were able to get as close as two runs at 5-3 in the middle of the third, but the Panthers scored four in the bottom of the third inning and never looked back.
Al Yevoli earned his first win of the season on the mound for High Point. Yevoli threw six innings and allowed five runs on 10 hits, while striking out two batters. Corey Swickle threw three scoreless innings to earn his second save.
Adzick suffered the loss for the Demon Deacons to drop to 0-2. Adzick gave up five runs, four of them earned on three hits with one walk.
Three different Wake Forest players had two hits to lead the Deacs at the plate. Weldon Woodall hit his eighth home run of the year and went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Micah Jarrett had two hits and an RBI, while Austin Stadler also added two hits.
Bill Manion led the Panthers at the plate with a perfect 5-for-5 day, including a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored. Max Fulginiti had a team-high four RBIs with two hits.
High Point struck first with five runs in the bottom of the first. Jeff Cowan drew a walk to lead off the game. Alfie Wheeler laid down a sacrifice bunt that was bobbled by Adzick. Adzick threw wildly to first, allowing Cowan to advance to third and Wheeler to move to second. Manion reached on an infield single up the middle and Cowan scored for the first run of the game. Adzick then made a bad throw to first trying to pickoff Manion to score Wheeler and move Manion to third. Kyle Mahoney doubled down the right-field line to plate Manion. Fulginiti extended his hitting streak to 26 games with a single up the middle to score Alvino and Mahoney to make the score 5-0.
The Deacs were able to cut a run off the High Point lead with a run in the top of the second. Woodall hit his eighth home run of the year with one out, a solo blast over the right-center field fence to cut the lead to 5-1.
Wake added two more runs in the top of the third. After Jarrett flew out to deep left to start the inning, Steven Brooks hit a sharp single to center. Shane Kroker roped a double off the wall in left field and Brooks came all the way around to score to cut the lead to 5-2. Dustin Hood followed with a single to left field to score Kroker.
High Point extended its lead with four runs in the bottom of the third. Manion and Alvino started the inning with consecutive singles. After Mahoney flew out to center, Fulginiti plugged the gap in left-center field to clear the bases. Spencer Andrews doubled past Carlos Lopez at third to score Fulginiti. Andrews moved to third when Eric Marion grounded out to short and scored on a wild pitch from Brandon Johnson.
The Deacs answered with two runs in the top of the fourth. Bentley Heyman led off the inning with a pinch-hit single to right. Stadler grounded to first to move Heyman to second. Evan Ocheltree singled to center to drive in Heyman for Wake's fourth run of the game. Ocheltree moved to second on his sixth stolen base of the year. Jarrett sent a double down the left-field line to bring Ocheltree to the plate to cut the lead to 9-5.
High Point was able to score its 10th run in the bottom of the fourth. Cowan led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wheeler. Manion drilled a single to score Cowan to stretch the Panther lead to 10-5.
The Panthers added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Andrews led off the inning with a single. Marion doubled to left-center field and the baseball got past Brooks allowing Andrews to score all the way from first. After the next two batters were retired, Wheeler singled to right, but Marion was thrown out by Jarrett at home to end the inning.
The Demon Deacons had a chance to cut into the lead with eighth, but stranded the bases loaded. Heyman led off the inning with a four-pitch walk and moved to second when Stadler hit a bloop single to center. After Ocheltree struck out swinging and Jarrett fouled out to the catcher, Brooks drew a walk to load the bases. Kroker hit a fly ball to center field to end the threat and keep the High Point lead at six.
High Point scored its final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth. Manion led off the inning with a home run to left field to make the score 12-5.
Wake Forest returns to Atlantic Coast Conference play this weekend when it travels to Tallahassee, Fla., for a three-game series against No. 21 Florida State. Game times are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
