WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - For the third time this year, the No. 5 Wake Forest women's golf team has been named Golfweek Women's Team of the Week.
The Demon Deacons earned the award for their wire-to-wire victory at last weekend's ACC Women's Golf Championships at Sedgefield Country Club.
Wake's victory came in convincing fashion as the Demon Deacon's won by 24 shots over second place North Carolina.
The win also snapped Duke's 13 year reign as ACC Champion. The Blue Devils had won each of the last 13 titles since Wake won back-to-back in 1994 and 1995.
All five Demon Deacons finished in the top-16 and three players finished in the top-5. Sophomore Natalie Sheary led the Wake charge as she won her first ACC individual crown with a 1-over total of 214.
Sheary finished the 54-hole tournament tied with Duke's three-time National Player of the Year Amanda Blumenherst. Sheary's par on the first playoff hole would give her the victory and end Blumenherst's streak of three-straight ACC individual titles.
The Demon Deacons carded a 286 in the opening round and a 287 in the final round. Both scores were the lowest round of day and were the second and third-lowest rounds of the year for the Deacs.
Wake also showed its ability to close over the weekend. Out of the four scores that counted each day, the Demon Deacons were a combined 3-under par on the back nine and a stunning 6-under par on the final nine on Sunday.
Individually, there were numerous bright spots. Sheary's round of 5-under 66 in the opening round was a career-low and set a new women's course record at Sedgefield. It was also the lowest 18-hole score ever posted by a Demon Deacon in any postseason event and tied teammate Nannette Hill's round of 5-under 67 at last season's NCAA Championship.
Hill posted her fifth top-5 finish this season and the fourth-place finish was her fourth of the year.
Senior Jean Chua fired a final round 2-under 69, which included a final-nine of 33. It was her lowest round of the season and tied her career-low.
Sophomore Allie Bodemann, who was playing in just her fourth tournament of the year, carded rounds of 73 and 71 on Saturday and Sunday to post her first top-10 finish of the season.
Freshman Cheyenne Woods posted a round of 73 on Sunday and finished tied for 16th in her first ACC Championship.
Wake was also named the Golfweek Team of the Week earlier this season after its previous two victories in the fall at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational on Oct. 3-5 and the Landfall Tradition on Oct. 24-26.
