Wake Forest Falls in Series Finale to Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A.J. Casario and Tyler Bennett each homered and drove in seven of Maryland's 15 runs as the Terrapins completed a three-game sweep on Sunday with a 15-4 victory at Shipley Field.
Wake Forest drops to 21-27 and 6-21 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Maryland improves to 27-26 and 10-20 in league play.
Mike Murray, Evan Ocheltree and Weldon Woodall led Wake Forest at the plate as each had two hits in the game. Woodall hit his ninth home run of the season and scored twice. Bentley Heyman and Carlos Lopez each added RBIs for the Demon Deacons.
Eight Maryland players had at least two hits in the game as the Terps pounded out 21 hits. Casario drove in a team-high four runs and scored three times, while Bennett added three RBIs and scored twice. David Poutier, Matthew Murakami and Alfredo Rodriguez each had two RBIs.
Scott Swinson earned the win for Maryland to improve to 7-4 on the season. He allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings pitched, while striking out four. Ian Schwalenberg earned his third save of the season by tossing three innings and giving up one run on one hits with three strikeouts.
Garrett Bullock suffered the loss for Wake Forest to fall to 1-4 on the year. He allowed six runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings. Bullock walked five and struck out three.
The Terps loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first, but didn't score. Jensen Pupa led off the game with a single to left and Casario and Mike Murphy drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Bullock got Bennett to strike out looking on a 3-2 pitch and forced Will Greenberg to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Wake Forest took the early lead with a run in the top of the second. Tyler Smith led off the inning with a double off the left-field wall and moved to third when Heyman flew out to right field. Lopez brought home Smith on a ground out to short.
Maryland evened the game with a run in the bottom of the second. Poutier opened the inning with a single and moved to third on a single to right field from Gerry Spessard. Spessard moved to second on a throwing error by Ocheltree in right field. Dan Benick grounded out to third for the first out of the inning. Rodriguez plated Poutier on a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game.
The Terps grabbed their first lead of the game with a run in the bottom of the third. Murphy led off the inning with a double down the left-field line. Bennett struck out swinging for the first out of the inning. Greenberg grounded out to first to move Murphy to third. Poutier roped a single to center for his second hit of the game to score Murphy and put Maryland in front 2-1.
Wake Forest wasted no time taking the lead back, scoring twice in the top of the fourth. Murray and Woodall led off the inning with consecutive singles. Smith grounded into a fielder's choice as the third baseman stepped on third for the first out of the inning. However, his throw across the diamond was low, allowing Smith to move to second and sending Woodall to third. The right fielder went to retrieve the throw, but bobbled the ball, bringing Woodall to the plate and sending Smith to third. Heyman put Wake Forest in front with an RBI single to left field.
Maryland regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Pupa singled and was along for the ride on Casario's two-run home run to center field that put the Terps in front 4-3.
The Terrapins stretched the lead to four with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Casario drew a walk and moved to third on a double to left field by Murphy. Bennett hit his fourth home run of the weekend, a three-run blast to left field, to give Maryland a 7-3 lead.
Wake Forest tried to mount a rally in the seventh, but couldn't score any runs. Ocheltree and Shane Kroker started the inning with back-to-back singles. However, Schwalenberg got the Terrapins out of the inning by getting Brooks to fly out to left and inducing a 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Hood to end the threat.
The Deacs got a run closer with a run in the top of the eighth. Woodall belted his ninth home run of the season, a solo shot over the center-field fence, to cut Maryland's advantage to 7-4.
Maryland broke the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the eighth. Poutier, Murakami, Rodriguez, Pupa, Casario and Greenberg each had RBIs in the inning. . Wake Forest plays its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday, May 12, as it plays host to Winthrop. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on the Internet at WakeForestSports.com.
