ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Michelle Shin won her second round match Thursday morning but at days end all three Demon Deacons had bowed out of the US Women's Amateur.
Shin took out Germany's Caroline Masson in her morning match but Nannette Hill and Natalie Sheary's weren't as fortunate and their runs at Old Warson Golf Club ended in the round of 32. Shin went on to play an epic match against Tiffany Lua in the afternoon but lost the final hole to lose the match 1-down.
The Cape Coral, Fla., product started the day off well as she took an early 1-up lead on Masson after the first hole and would never trail in her 3 and 1 victory. She then took on Lua in the round of 16 and unfortunately, Shin came up on the wrong end of the see-saw battle.
She won both holes four and five to take an early 2-up lead but then lost the next three holes to fall 1-down. Lua kept her lead at the turn but bogeyed No. 10 and the match was again all-square through 11.
Shin then birdied the par-5 12th to retake a 1-up lead and then would halve the next three holes to hold that 1-up lead through 15. Lua birdied the par-5 16th to square the match and after both players made par at No. 17, the match went to the 18th all-square.
At the 18th, Lua made a nice birdie and the best Shin could do was par, thus ending her run.
Hill also found herself in a good match Thursday morning against Auburn standout Cydney Clanton. She held an early 2-up lead through three but like Shin, she lost holes six, seven and eight to fall 1-down.
The Pelham Manor, N.Y., native then squared the match right away at No. 9 with a par and took another 1-up lead with a par at 11. She then lost her lead after she bogeyed both 13 and 14 and was still 1-down with two holes to play. The long par-3 17th gave a lot of players trouble and Hill would end up bogeying the hole to lose the match 2 and 1.
Sheary had to face the young standout Erynne Lee of Silverdale, Wash on Thursday. Lee was 1-up through five but Sheary won both six and eight and she took that 1-up to the turn.
Lee then regained the lead with birdies at 10 and 11 and extended it to 2-up after Sheary bogeyed the par-3 13th. The players halved the next two holes and Lee closed out the match, 3 and 2, with a birdie at No. 16.
In all, there were a total of five Demon Deacons in the field this week. Rising-sophomore Cheyenne Woods made the match play cut but fell in her first round match on Wednesday and 2008 graduate Jordan Craig had a tough two qualifying days and missed the cut for match play.
