BLACKSBURG, Va. - Sophomore Anna Nosenko captured the individual 4.6-kilometer title at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational on Friday night at the Virginia Tech Home Cross Country Course. The Wake Forest women finished second behind third-ranked Florida State. The men's team came in fifth with a combined score of 121, with freshman Garret Drogosch leading the way in the 7.6K.
Anna Nosenko finished the course in 16:09.4, an astonishing 15 seconds ahead of the second-place runner, for her first-ever regular season cross country title.
Anna Nosenko has now finished first at both cross country events this season. She also placed first in the individual combined two-leg 5K time at the Wake Forest Relays on Sept. 4.
Sophomore Dina Nosenko was not far behind her sister. Dina Nosenko placed fifth overall with a time of 16:34.2. Junior Marley Burns (17:21.7) and redshirt freshman Casey Fowler (17:26.9) scored for the Deacons, finishing 15th and 16th overall, respectively.
Redshirt junior Kim Vos, competing in her first collegiate cross country meet, scored for the Deacons with a time of 18.02.2, which was good for 24th place.
Freshman Claire Hagler came in 27th overall and completed the course in a time of 18.06.1. Junior Suzie Clinchy (18:22.2) finished 34th overall in the field of collegiate runners participating in the event.
"In the women's race, we had a plan. Coming into the meet, we had certain groups sticking together, and they did that almost to the tee. Anna [Nosenko], Dina [Nosenko] and Marley [Burns] would hang behind Florida State in the first mile and then work on dropping the hammer. They did that, and Anna just kept going. She felt really strong. The other girls did great too, like Kim Vos in her first-ever 5K. I was happy with the group but we still have a few things to finish."
The men's team, after having to scratch multiple runners late due to illness, finished fifth of eight teams at the opening regular season meet.
Newcomer Garret Drogosch placed 11th overall and paced the Deacons with a time of 24:48.6. Finishing 16th in scoring, sophomore Paul Loeser also had a strong race totaling a time of 25:05.9.
Also scoring for Wake Forest were redshirt senior Jeremy Fisico (25:19.4) in 23rd, redshirt junior Keaton Morgan (25:43.9) in 34th and sophomore Ben Morrow (25:48.8) in 37th.
Host Virginia Tech took first in the men's event, and Gilbert Kemboi of USC Upstate won the individual collegiate title with a time of 23:43.9.
The Wake Forest cross country teams will be back in action in two weeks. On Friday, Oct. 2, one group of runners will travel to the Lehigh Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa., where Greg Billington came away with a victory in the White Division last season. Another contingent of Deacons will compete in Greensboro, N.C., at the Hagan Stone Classic on Saturday, Oct. 3.
