OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - Fresh off a successful Walker Cup, senior Brendan Gielow cards an opening round 72 to lead the Wake Forest men's golf team on day one of the Olympia Fields/Illini Invitational at famed Olympia Fields Country Club.
Gielow made three birdies and two bogeys in his opening nine to make the turn at 1-under par. He was even-par with three to play before a double at the par-3 16th dropped him to 2-over which is where he finished. His 72 has him tied for 17th.
As a team, the Deacons carded a round of 20-over 300 on the tough 7,205-yard, par-70 layout. Wake will start the second round in 13th place.
Sophomore Lee Bedford endured a double-bogey on the fifth and would make the turn at 4-over par. He would play better on the back, making just two bogeys and one birdie for a round of 75. Bedford will start Saturday in a tie for 36th.
Fellow sophomore Daniel Meggs is a shot behind him in 43rd place after an opening round 76. He made a total of seven bogeys and one birdie in his round.
Senior Travis Wadkins birdied the par-4 ninth to make the turn at 1-over par but a pair of triples on the back nine would leave him with an opening round 77. Fellow senior Marc Gladson struggled to get anything going on Friday and go on to card an 85.
Northwestern's Eric Chun is in a three-way tie for the lead after an opening round 68. Behind Chun, the Huskies took the opening round lead at 6-over 286. Florida State is two-shots behind them at 8-over while Texas is third (+12) and host Illinois leads three teams tied for fourth at 13-over.
Olympia Fields has hosted a number of major championships and it seemed to give the players a bit of trouble as the opening round scoring average was a lofty 74.19.
The Deacons will start the second round at 8:40 am CST off the back nine. Golfstat.com will host live scoring of each of the final two rounds.
