MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. - Senior Brendan Gielow fired rounds of 70 and 67 on Monday and leads by two shots after the first two rounds of the VCU Shootout at The Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va. As a team, Wake Forest is in second place but trail UNC Wilmington by nine shots heading into Tuesday's final round.

Gielow, who stands at 7-under par, also won this tournament last year with a career-low 12-under 201 total. He leads UNC Greensboro's Robert Hoadley by two shots and Charlotte's Corey Nagy by three.

The Deacons had a bit of an up-and-down day, carding a 6-over 294 in the opening round but bounced-back with a 2-under 286 in the afternoon. However, in both rounds, the team had a tough time finishing-off the round as it was 5-over the last three holes in the morning and 4-over the last four holes in the afternoon.

"Obviously we didn't finish the rounds like we wanted but I think the guys hung in there well most of the day," said head coach Jerry Haas. "The greens were much faster today then they were in the practice round and it took a little getting used too. Brendan played beautifully today and really kept us in there."

Wake was tied for seventh after the first round and trailed UNC Wilmington by 13 shots as the Seahawks shot a 7-under 281. The Deacons then climbed to third midway through round two as it was 2-under for the round and 4-over for the tournament and got to as high as 1-over for the day but slipped a bit down the stretch and posted a 286. UNC Wilmington shot a 290 in the second round and leads the Deacs by nine shots with a round to play.

Gielow made a total of four birdies in his opening round 70 and then got off to a great start in the second round, making four birdies in his first nine holes to make the turn at 4-under par. He led the tournament by two shots at the midway point.

He then made a birdie at the par-5, 11th to move to 7-under and another at the 15th got him to 8-under on the day and 6-under for the round. Despite a bogey at No. 18, the 2009 Walker Cup member, still leads the tournament by two shots at 7-under par.

Sophomore Lee Bedford was 2-over at the turn in the morning round but finished 2-over par in his last six holes to post a 75 in round one. He was then 3-over par through nine holes in the second round but after three pars at 10-12, the Cary, N.C., native made birdies at Nos. 13, 14 and 15 and another at 17 to get to 1-under for the round. But just like Gielow, he would bogey to final hole to post an even-par 72.

Bedford will start the final round tied for 25th at 3-over par.

"Lee hung in there well today," said Haas. "He was 4-over through eight holes this afternoon and played beautifully to get back to even. In team golf, that is huge, carding a 72 compared to a 75 or 76 means the difference of one of two places."

Freshman Evan Beck, playing in just his second collegiate event, made four bogeys and one birdie in his opening round 75 and then was even-par through his first seven holes of round two before three-straight birdies vaulted him back to even-par for the day. But the rookie would play his final eight holes at 4-over par to post a 73 and will start the final round tied for 29th at 4-over.

Senior Travis Wadkins was 4-over through his first 10 holes of the day and had fallen to as much as 7-over but he birdied each of the last three holes in the opening round to salvage a 4-over 76. He then started his second round with nine-straight pars before bogeying the 204-yard, par-3 12th. He made another bogey at No. 13 but then pared the last seven to card a 74. Wadkins will start Tuesday's final round in a tie for 44th at 6-over par. Daniel Meggs is a shot behind Wadkins at 7-over after posting scores of 74-77. He was 2-under with two to play in the morning round but finished with a bogey and a triple-bogey to card a 74. The second round didn't start out much better as he was 4-over through the first seven but regrouped and was just 1-over the rest of the way.

Freshman Charlie Harrison is playing in his first collegiate tournament this week as an individual. He made three birdies in his first six holes and remained 2-under under par with a hole to play but a double-bogey left with him an even-par 72.

He then bogeyed four out of his first five holes in the second round to fall back to 4-over and would play the rest of the round at even-par to card a second round 76. He is tied with Beck at 4-over par.

Virginia and VCU are tied for third and are just one shot behind the Deacons at 5-over par. Wake is paired with UNC Wilmington and VCU in the final round, which will start with a shotgun start at 8:45 am. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of the Tuesday's round.

"We're in the final group tomorrow which is where you want to be for the final round," said Haas. "We need to go out there and play well like we did today and finish off a round and then we'll see what happens."
