WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The second-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team will play the first of two regular season matchups with fourth-ranked North Carolina tonight at 6 p.m. in Chapel Hill. Tonight's contest will not count towards conference standings.
Both the Tar Heels (2-0) and the Demon Deacons (2-0) opened the season with back-to-back wins at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, hosted by Iowa. No. 19 Michigan fell 2-1 to both teams, while Wake squeaked by ninth-ranked Iowa with a 2-1 win and UNC ran away with a 5-0 victory over the Hawkeyes on the second day of play.
Matches between the Deacons and the Heels are historically intense and extremely close. Last season, the Deacons pulled out a 2-1 double-overtime victory in the pouring rain at Kentner Stadium in the first matchup of the season, but UNC stopped Wake Forest in Chapel Hill 4-3 for the conference point. In the 2008 ACC Tournament, third-seeded Wake Forest upset No. 2 UNC in the semifinals, 2-1.
On Sunday Wake Forest will have another tough road contest, facing No. 12 James Madison (2-0) in Harrisonburg, Va. The match will serve as the home opener for the Dukes, who were on the road last weekend at Ohio State and Kent State.
