WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The second-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team suffered a disappointing 4-1 loss to fourth-ranked UNC on Friday evening in Chapel Hill. Sophomore Kaitlin Piosa scored the only Wake Forest goal of the night, converting on a penalty stroke in the first half.
Piosa's goal in the 29th minute knotted the score, following up a UNC (3-0) penalty stroke netted by Melanie Brill. Illse Davids pushed UNC forward 2-1 just before the halftime break when she snuck in a shot from the deep right side of the circle.
The Deacons held a 10-5 edge in shots in the first half, but the momentum shifted drastically for the final 35 minutes as UNC held a 10-3 shot advantage. Melanie Brill put UNC up 3-1 in the 50th minute when she converted on a penalty corner. Elizabeth Drazdowski caught Wake Forest goalkeeper Julia Young out of the cage to score UNC's final goal of the evening with under 20 seconds to play.
Wake Forest (2-1) will now face James Madison on Sunday in Harrisonburg.
