WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Sandra Garcia put up 21 points and 11 rebounds en route to Wake Forest's 64-57 upset over No. 20 Virginia on Sunday afternoon in Winston-Salem.
The win marks only the third time in program history that Wake Forest has topped the Cavaliers. Virginia is the second Top 25 team that the Demon Deacons have down this season, the first was No. 25 Miami on January 17 in Winston-Salem.
With the win Wake Forest improves to 13-8 and 4-3 in the ACC and Virginia stalls at 15-6, 4-3.
After scoring in single digits since her 22-point performance against Virginia Tech on January 7, freshman center Garcia broke through to lead all scorers with 21 points.
"I haven't been playing like myself the last few games," Garcia said.
"But the last week something clicked and I've been working hard in practices, really working on rebounding and finishing strong."
Wake Forest's sophomore forward Secily Ray also recorded a double-double with 14 points and the game-high 12 rebounds.
Lexie Gerson had 15 points for Virginia and Paulisha Kellum had the team-high eight rebounds.
Wake Forest held a 29-21 advantage at halftime, led in scoring by Garcia who put up eight points and seven rebounds.
With 16:27 to play Chelsea Shine hit a jumper from a steal by Lexie Gerson to put the Cavaliers within one point (32-31), but Virginia would never gain the lead in the second half.
"When you make free throws and get rebounds you can survive down the stretch," Wake Forest head coach Mike Petersen said. "That's what we did and we were able to pull it out."
Wake Forest out-rebounded UVA 46-37 and went 9-for-11 from the free throw line in the final five minutes.
"I'm so proud of this team. So many times we are on the other side of these close games but they really worked hard to get this one," Petersen said.
Wake Forest will continue play in the ACC on Friday evening against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. at 6:30 p.m.
