WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior Kerry Ergen scored twice and junior Adelaide Knott and freshman Jess McFadyen each had a goal and an assist to lead the No. 13 Wake Forest field hockey team past Radford 4-3 Wednesday evening at Kentner Stadium.
With the result, each team is now 8-6 on the season. The win for the Deacs marks the 14th consecutive victory that Wake Forest has posted over Radford.
Ergen's goals were the first two of the season for her, while Knott and McFadyen each beat the keeper for the third time this year.
All of the scoring occurred during the first half, with Radford's first goal coming in the fifth minute and Wake Forest's final goal coming in the 35th minute.
The Highlanders took leads of 2-0 and 3-1 before the Demon Deacons were able to score three unanswered goals to close out the half and earn the victory.
Radford had its 2-0 lead less than 11 minutes into the game. Courtney Poole scored both goals for the Highlanders, finding the back of the cage at 4:37 and 10:51. Poole's second goal was assisted by Marlee Schramm who passed her the ball from the top of the circle to the left post.
Knott put Wake Forest on the board just 18 seconds later to make the score 2-1. Freshman Kari Walkley created a breakaway opportunity after the restart whistle and had a shot deflect off the post. Knott collected the rebound and took a shot from a tough angle on the right side that deflected off of a Radford defender and into the goal.
The Highlanders regained a two-goal lead in the 17th minute when Kay Tufts scored her eighth goal of the year off a pass from Melissa Register.
The Demon Deacons then scored three straight goals to end the half and take a 4-3 lead into halftime. Ergen scored the first of her goals after a cross from Knott at 24:27.
McFadyen tied the score at 3-3 at 25:51 on a reverse shot from the left side that bounced off the head of a Highlander defender and into the cage.
Ergen's second goal was a fantastic diving effort. McFadyen sent the ball to the right post from the top left side of the circle, and Ergen was there to dive and deflect the ball past the keeper.
With less than 15 minutes remaining in the game, Knott had another breakaway and tried to add an insurance goal with a nice shot just inside the circle, but Radford goalkeeper Jennifer Wisniewski made a great save to keep the Highlanders down just a goal.
Wake Forest was able to generate more overall opportunities with 17 shots and five penalty corners. Radford tallied just eight shots and four corners.
The Deacons will have several days off before they travel to Virginia on Saturday, October 23, at 1 p.m.
