The four goals marked the most in a season opener since Wake Forest scored six against Iowa to open the 2006 season.

IOWA CITY, IOWA – The No. 20 Wake Forest field hockey team dropped an offensive shootout to start the 2025 season, falling to No. 15 Iowa, 5-4, on Friday afternoon at Grant Field.

Junior Faye Janse brought Wake Forest level in the first quarter with a great individual run, sending a shot past the Hawkeye goalie to tie the game early.

Wake Forest was highly effective on attack penalty corners, scoring three of its four goals off set pieces.

Sophomore Mia Montag recorded her first career brace, netting a pair of goals for the Demon Deacons off two set pieces from Wake penalty corners.

Junior Mia Schoenbeck fired a laser from the top of the circle off another corner for her first of the season.

Quotables
"Tough loss and most certainly could have gone either way. Super excited about our ability to convert on penalty corners and generate attack. The team fought incredibly hard and we will focus our attention on connections." - head coach Jen Averill
