
No. 20 Wake Forest Falls in High-Scoring Season Opener

The four goals marked the most in a season opener since Wake Forest scored six against Iowa to open the 2006 season.
IOWA CITY, IOWA – The No. 20 Wake Forest field hockey team dropped an offensive shootout to start the 2025 season, falling to No. 15 Iowa, 5-4, on Friday afternoon at Grant Field.
Junior Faye Janse brought Wake Forest level in the first quarter with a great individual run, sending a shot past the Hawkeye goalie to tie the game early.
Wake Forest was highly effective on attack penalty corners, scoring three of its four goals off set pieces.
Sophomore Mia Montag recorded her first career brace, netting a pair of goals for the Demon Deacons off two set pieces from Wake penalty corners.
Junior Mia Schoenbeck fired a laser from the top of the circle off another corner for her first of the season.

How It Happened
- Iowa took a 1-0 advantage in the first minute of the contest.
- The Demon Deacons immediately answered with a great individual run by junior Faye Janse.
- Janse intercepted a pass at the 25, worked down the left side of the circle and beat the Iowa keeper to knot the contest at 1-1 less than three minutes into the game.
- Wake Forest earned the first penalty corner of the match halfway through the opening quarter, with Mia Schoenbeck having her shot deflected by the Hawkeye defense.
- With just over three minutes left in the opening quarter, the Deacs earned another penalty corner, as Mia Montag converted on a beautiful slip play after the insert to put Wake Forest in front, 2-1.
- After a fast start in the first quarter for both sides, both teams settled in for the majority of the second quarter.
- The Hawkeyes converted on their first penalty corner to tie the match at 2-2 going into halftime.
- Wake Forest struck once again off a penalty corner to reclaim the lead.
- Schoenbeck ripped a shot from the top of the circle that found the back of the cage to put the Demon Deacons on top, 3-2.
- Iowa found the goal on a penalty corner of its own to tie the game at three in the third quarter.
- A quick counterattack goal gave Iowa a 4-3 lead.
- For the third time in the opening game of the season, Wake Forest converted off a penalty corner, as Montag found the back of the cage for her second goal to tie the game once again.
- Iowa scored off a penalty corner once again with under two minutes left to take a 5-4 advantage.
- The Hawkeyes held on for a 5-4 victory.
