WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshman J.T. Terrell had 32 points, including the game-winning three-pointer with 2.7 seconds left, to lead Wake Forest to a 76-73 win over Iowa in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Tuesday evening at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
The Deacons move to 4-3 on the season while the Hawkeyes fall to 3-4.
With the game tied at 73 in the final minute, Terrell made a fadeaway three-pointer from 25 feet to put the Deacs in front 76-73. On the ensuing inbounds pass, Ty Walker knocked the pass away from the Iowa player as time expired.
Terrell started the game 0-for-3 behind the arc, but proceeded to hit seven of his final eight three pointers. Terrell finished with 32 points, becoming the first Wake Forest freshman to score 30-plus points in a game since Chris King scored 34 points on March 4, 1989. Terrell's seven three pointers made also tied the school's freshman record, equaling the mark set by Robert O'Kelley on January 31, 1998.
Sophomores C.J. Harris and Ari Stewart scored in double figures for the Deacons as well, with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Junior Ty Walker fell just short of a double-double, with eight points and eight rebounds, along with five blocks.
Wake Forest trailed by as many as 18 points in the contest. The 18-point comeback tied for the third-largest comeback in school history and the largest comeback since Wake overcame an 18-point deficit against Duke on March 10, 1995.
As a team, Wake Forest shot 52.2 percent (24-for-46) for the game, including 70 percent during the second half. The Deacons also shot 80 percent (20-of-25) from the free throw line.
Both teams started the game slowly, but after a series of fouls Iowa grabbed an early five-point lead (10-5) with 16:24 remaining.
The Hawkeyes continued with the momentum, going on an 8-2 run over the next four minutes to grab an 18-7 lead. Eric May had two dunks for Iowa during the run.
Wake Forest responded with a 10-3 run keyed by two three-pointers from Terrell to pull within five, 26-21, at the 6:08 mark.
Iowa led by as many as 18 in the first half, but Wake Forest scored the final six points of the half to cut the Hawkeye lead to 12 entering intermission.
The Deacons came out firing in the second half, cutting the lead to seven, 43-36, after an electrifiying dunk from Stewart.
Wake continued their strong run with Terrell (8 points during the run) blazing from behind the arc. The 18-0 run spanned six minutes before finally being broken on a jump shot by Bryce Cartwright that made the score 50-45 in favor of Wake Forest.
After two free throws from McKie, the Deacons opened their first double-digit lead of the night, 62-52, at the 8:47 mark.
The Hawkeyes kept it close, evening the score at 73 with just over a minute remaining to set up Terrell's last minute heroics.
May led the Hawkeyes with 17 points, and Melsahn Basabe nearly had a double-double of his own, finishing with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Iowa shot 31-of-71 (43.7 percent) from the field, and had 17 offensive rebounds compared to just two for the Deacons.
Wake Forest will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 4, when the Deacons host the Holy Cross Crusaders for the first time since the 1959-60 season. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Joel Coliseum.
