WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest baseball team split a doubleheader on Saturday, defeating Dayton 7-5 in the first game and falling 5-2 to Army in the nightcap at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.

Wake Forest is now 2-1 on the season.

Ryan Semeniuk led Wake offensively, finishing the day 4-for-7 at the plate with three RBIs and a run scored. Austin Stadler homered in both games and drove in four runs on the day.

On the mound, Joel Ernst saw time out of the bullpen in each game, tossing 2.2 innings on the day and allowing a run on three hits, while fanning four.

Game 1: Cooney Impressive in Collegiate Debut; Wake Downs Dayton, 7-5

Making his collegiate debut, freshman Tim Cooney allowed just two runs over 6.1 innings to lead Wake Forest to a 7-5 win against Dayton on Saturday afternoon at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.

Wake Forest improved to 2-0 on the season, while Dayton dropped to 0-2.

Cooney (1-0) handcuffed the Dayton batters through 6.1 impressive innings. The Collegeville, Pa., native gave up just two runs on five hits and struck out six, while not walking a batter.

Michael Dimock pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first save of the season. Dimock struck out one and walked a batter in his one inning of work.

Justin Van Grouw and Joel Ernst also saw time out of the bullpen. Van Grouw gave up two runs, one earned, on one hit and two strikeouts in 0.2 innings, while Ernst threw one inning and allowed a run on two hits, with one strikeout.

Austin Stadler had a team-high three RBIs and hit his first home run of the season. Steven Brooks, Bentley Heyman, Ryan Semeniuk and Mike Murray each had two hits, while Semeniuk also drove in two runs. Murray scored twice and drove in a run as well.

Burny Mitchem (0-1) suffered the loss for Dayton, giving up seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits in 5.0 innings of work. Mitchem struck out five batters and walked one.

Jimmy Roesinger went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run and three RBIs. Aaron Dunsmore also homered and went 2-for-4, while Dan Welch was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

For the second straight day, Wake Forest jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the first inning. Patrick Blair reached to start the inning on a three-base fielding error on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder. Semeniuk drove in Blair on a single up the middle. Semeniuk immediately stole second and came around to score when Murray lined a single into right-center, making the score 2-0.

Dayton answered back with a run in the top of the second. Cole Tyrell laced a one-out single through the left side and moved to second on a stolen base when Jonathan Castine struck out looking. Welch drove home Tyrell on a hit-and-run single through the left side to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Demon Deacons added on to their lead with a pair of runs in the third. Brooks placed a one-out double just inside the right field line. After Murray walked, Mac Williamson grounded a single up the middle to score Brooks and send Murray to third. Stadler followed with a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Murray.

Wake Forest tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth. Heyman reached on a bunt single to first with one out and stole second. A fly out to right by Blair advanced Heyman to third. Semeniuk chopped a base hit over the head of the third baseman to score Heyman to make the score 5-1.

The Deacs continued to extend the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Murray led off the inning with a pop up to second that the second baseman lost in the sun for a base hit. After Williamson flied out to right, Stadler launched a 1-0 pitch over the wall in right field to put Wake in front 7-1.

Dayton made things interesting with a run in the seventh and three runs in the eighth. In the seventh, Dunsmore hit the first pitch of the inning over the wall in right field to cut the lead to 7-2. Roesinger cleared the bases in the top of the eighth with his first home run of the season, a three-run shot to right center to make the score 7-5.

The Flyers were able to get the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth after Dimock walked Zach Blanchette with two outs. Dimock was able to strike out Mitchell Nelson to end the game.

Game 2: Wake Forest Suffers First Loss of 2010; Falls 5-2 to Army

Kevin McKague went 3-for-4, hit two home runs and drove in three to lead the Army Black Knights to a 5-2 win against Wake Forest on Saturday evening at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.

Army improves to 2-1 on the season, while Wake Forest drops to 2-1 on the campaign.

McKague contributed both offensively and on the mound for the Black Knights. At the plate, he hit his second and third home runs of the season, drove in three runs and scored twice. On the mound, he earned his first save of the season, tossing a perfect ninth inning to secure the win.

Cody Murtle went 2-for-4 on the night with an RBI for Amy, while J.T. Watkins also drove in a run during a 1-for-3 performance.

Ben Koenigsfeld (1-0) earned the victory for the Black Knights, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing two runs on nine hits, while striking out five and not allowing a walk. Steve Cummings also pitched well in relief, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings and giving up just one hit.

Mac Williamson and Austin Stadler each homered for Wake Forest, going back-to-back in the fourth inning. It marked the first time that Wake Forest players had hit back-to-back home runs since March 4, 2009, at UNC Wilmington. Both Williamson and Stadler went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Ryan Semeniuk and Shane Kroker also had multi-hit games for the Demon Deacons.

Brandon Johnson (0-1) got the loss for Wake Forest, surrendering four runs on five hits in four innings of action. Johnson struck out four and did not walk a batter.

The Wake Forest bullpen kept the Demon Deacons in the game, only giving up one run in five innings. Mark Adzick threw 1.1 scoreless innings, while Joel Ernst struck out three and gave up just one hit in 1.2 innings. Zach White allowed a run on a hit in 1.1 innings and Gabe Feldman threw 0.2 scoreless innings.

Army scored first with two runs in the top of the second. Joey Henshaw led off the inning with a single that fell between the shortstop and left fielder. Kevin McKague followed with a two-run homer, his second home run of the season, to center field.

The Black Knights doubled the lead with two more runs in the fourth. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, McKague hit his second homer of the game, a solo blast to right field. Koenigsfeld then doubled to right center and came around to score on a single by J.T. Watkins.

Wake Forest responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Williamson hit the first home run of his collegiate career, a mammoth blast over the left field wall fence. Stadler followed with his second homer of the day, going to the opposite field and sending the ball over the left field wall.

Army added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Koenigsfeld drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a throwing error by White on a failed pickoff attempt. After Watkins was hit by a pitch, Cody Murtle singled to right center to drive in Koenigsfeld.

After the fourth inning, Wake Forest was able to generate little offense over the final five frames. The Deacs had just two hits after the fourth and were set down in order in both the eighth and the ninth.

Wake Forest closes the opening weekend of the season on Sunday at 1 p.m. (ET) against Dayton. Freshman Niko Spezial will start for Wake Forest, while Dayton has yet to announce a starter. Admission to the game is free of charge.
