Weekly Recap:
Wake Forest finished the last week with a 1-3 record after falling 11-3 in a midweek game at High Point and losing two of three games at Virginia Tech over the weekend. The Deacs dropped the series opener against the Hokies, 7-0, on Friday night. Due to expected rain on Sunday, the two teams played a doubleheader on Saturday. Wake Forest won the first game of the twin bill, 5-0, but the Hokies came back to win the second game, 2-1, and clinch the series.
The Demon Deacons are now 8-17 on the season and 2-7 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. As a team, Wake Forest is hitting .258 on the season, while the pitching staff has compiled a 5.81 ERA.
Wake Forest struggled at the plate over the last week, hitting .229 as a team. Mike Murray and Mac Williamson led Wake Forest on the week with a .333 batting average. Murray had an RBI and a run scored, while Williamson drove in two runs and had two doubles. Carlos Lopez hit .308 with a home run on the week. Matt Conway hit .375 (3-for-8) on the week with an RBI and a run scored, while Mark Rhine hit .333 (3-for-9) with an RBI last week.
Murray leads the Demon Deacons on the season with a .337 batting average. He is tied for the team lead with three home runs and has a team-best 21 RBIs. Steven Brooks is hitting .315 on the year with three homers and 11 RBIs. Conway is batting .333 on the season with five RBIs. Along with Brooks and Murray, Pat Blair, Lopez and Ryan Semeniuk are all tied for the team lead with three homers.
The Wake Forest pitching staff posted a 4.36 ERA on the week. The Demon Deacons got three solid starts during the weekend series at Virginia Tech. On Friday, Michael Dimock went 6.2 innings, allowing six runs, only three of which were earned, while striking out seven. Tim Cooney had the best start of his young collegiate career on Saturday, pitching a career-long 8.0 shutout innings, scattering five hits and two en route to improving his record to 3-1 on the season. Austin Stadler tossed his first collegiate complete game in a loss on Saturday. Stadler gave up just two runs on 10 hits in his 8.0 innings of work. The sophomore lefty became the first Wake Forest pitcher to throw a complete game since May 23, 2008, when Charlie Mellies went the distance against North Carolina.
Out of the bullpen, Joel Ernst had two scoreless outings on the week. Ernst threw two perfect innings, including combining for the shutout with Cooney in Saturday's game at Virginia Tech. The shutout for Wake Forest was the team's first since May 16, 2008, when the Demon Deacons blanked Boston College. Ryan Bouton, Matt Conway, Ryan McGrath, Niko Spezial, Justin Van Grouw and Zach White each had a scoreless appearance in relief on the week.
Cooney has a team-leading 2.97 ERA on the season with a 3-1 record. In 39.1 innings pitched, Cooney has allowed 18 runs, 13 of them earned, on 39 hits, while striking out 24 and walking seven. Alex Wiesner has an 0-1 record and a 4.50 ERA in four appearances on the year. Stadler has compiled a 4.58 ERA and a 1-1 record in six starts, while Spezial is 1-3 with a 4.72 ERA in seven outings. Ernst has appeared in 12 games on the season and has a 0-0 record with two saves and a 4.91 ERA.
Wake Forest returns to action this week with five games scheduled. The Deacs host Charlotte on Tuesday at 6 p.m., before traveling to Elon on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. contest. The Demon Deacons travel to No. 15 Miami for a three-game series next weekend. Game times are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Saturday game of the series will be televised by CSS.
