Weekly Recap:
Wake Forest finished the last week with a 3-0 record after sweeping Xavier in a three-game series. The Deacs won the first game 4-2 and claimed the second game, 6-1. Wake Forest finished the sweep with a 12-10 come-from-behind win in Sunday's series finale.
Wake Forest is now 6-6 on the season.
As a team, Wake Forest hit .323 in the three-game series against the Musketeers. Junior center fielder Steven Brooks hit .556 (5-for-9) in the three-game set with three RBIs and three runs scored. Senior catcher Mike Murray posted a .500 (5-for-10) batting average against the Musketeers with his first two home runs of the season, five RBIs and two runs scored. Redshirt junior left fielder Ryan Semeniuk stretched his hitting streak to 12 games with at least one hit in each game of the series. Semeniuk hit .400 (4-for-10) on the weekend with a homer and two RBIs. Sophomore pitcher/first baseman Austin Stadler hit .333 (3-for-9) in the series, while freshman first baseman/pitcher Matt Conway hit .750 (3-for-4) in limited at bats.
For the season, Semeniuk leads the team with a .396 batting average and three home runs. He is also second on the team with 10 RBIs. Murray is hitting .350 on the season with two round-trippers and a team-leading 13 RBIs. Brooks is hitting at a .350 clip with a homer, six RBIs and a team-leading five stolen bases.
The Wake Forest pitching staff compiled a 3.67 earned run average on the weekend. Wake Forest's Friday and Saturday starters each turned in solid outings. Making his first start of the season, Friday night starter Michael Dimock earned his first win of the season, allowing two unearned runs on four hits in six innings of work. Saturday starter Tim Cooney improved his record to 2-0 on the season, pitching a career-long 7.2 innings, and giving up one run on six hits, while striking out four.
Freshman Niko Spezial earned the first win of his collegiate career in relief on Sunday. Spezial pitched two scoreless innings, giving up two hits. Conway continued to impress on the mound, earning a save in the series opener against Xavier. Conway pitched three perfect innings with one strikeout. Zach White and Ryan McGrath each had two scoreless outings out of the bullpen, while Joel Ernst picked up his second save of the season in Sunday's series finale, pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
Conway has yet to allow a run in his two appearances on the season. Conway has given up just one hit in 6.0 innings of work and struck out five. Cooney has a 1.35 ERA on the year with a 2-0 record. Dimock has posted a 1-1 record with one save and a 1.54 ERA. Spezial (1-2, 3.00 ERA), Ernst (0-0, 2 saves, 3.18 ERA) and White (0-0, 3.68 ERA) all have ERAs under 4.00 on the season.
Wake Forest hits the road for the first time in the 2010 season this week with five games. The Deacs play at No. 8 Coastal Carolina on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and at UNC Wilmington on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Wake opens ACC play next weekend with a three-game series at fourth-ranked Georgia Tech. Game times are set for 4 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
