Weekly Recap:
The Wake Forest baseball team finished last week with a 2-3 record. After losing a pair of midweek games, the Demon Deacons bounced back by winning two of three games from Duke over the weekend. The Deacs opened the week with a 6-4 loss at Charlotte and a 13-7 home defeat against UNC Greensboro. After losing the first game of the series against the Blue Devils, 10-3, Wake Forest won the final two games of the series, winning 18-3 on Saturday and 7-1 on Sunday.
The Demon Deacons are now 12-31 on the season and 4-17 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Freshman Matt Conway led Wake Forest at the plate over the past week, hitting .476 (10-for-21) with an RBI, three doubles and four runs scored. Redshirt junior Ryan Semeniuk posted a .381 batting average (8-for-21) with two homers, six RBIs and eight runs scored. Freshman Mark Rhine hit .368 (7-for-19) on the week, while fellow freshman Pat Blair hit .333 (7-for-21). Senior Mike Murray drove in a team-high seven RBIs and had a .300 batting average (6-for-20) and freshman Mike Lubanski hit his first collegiate home run and went 2-for-5 on the week.
Conway leads Wake Forest with a .343 batting average on the season and has hit two homers and driven in 16 runs. Junior Steven Brooks is hitting .331 on the year to go along with five home runs and 27 RBIs. Brooks has also stolen a team-high 22 bases on the season and moved into the top 10 in career stolen bases at Wake Forest with his 48th steal earlier in the week. Murray is hitting .327 on the year with three homers and a team-high 36 RBIs, while Semeniuk is swinging the bat at a .303 clip with a team-leading eight homers and 23 RBIs.
On the mound, Michael Dimock and Austin Stadler each turned in solid starts in the weekend series against Duke. Dimock struck out a career-high 11 batters and gave up just one run over 8.0 innings to earn the win in Sunday's series finale. Stadler also picked up a win on the mound, giving up two runs, only one earned run, on nine hits with four strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Dimock, who also pitched Tuesday at Charlotte, finished the week with a 3.60 ERA, allowing six runs on 14 hits with 16 strikeouts in 15.0 innings of work.
Out of the bullpen, sophomore Zach White appeared in two games over the past week and did not allow an earned run. White pitched 3.2 innings and gave up one unearned run on three hits with two strikeouts. Juniors Mark Adzick and Brandon Johnson and freshman Justin Van Grouw did not allow a run on the week out of the bullpen, while redshirt senior Joel Ernst pitched in three games and gave up a run in 3.0 innings with five strikeouts.
Ernst has the lowest ERA on the season for Wake Forest, compiling a 1-1 record with two saves and a 4.21 ERA in 22 appearances, all in relief. Freshman Niko Spezial is 1-4 on the year with a 4.24 ERA in nine outings, while freshman Tim Cooney has a 3-4 record and a 4.55 ERA in 10 starts on the season. Van Grouw has posted a 1-3 record with a 4.91 ERA in 13 appearances, including seven starts.
Wake Forest is back in action on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. first pitch at Appalachian State. After Wednesday's game, the Deacs will have eight days off for finals and will return to the field on Friday, May 7, for the first game of a three-game series at North Carolina.
