Weekly Recap:
The Wake Forest baseball team finished last week with a 1-4 record after splitting midweek games against Charlotte and Elon and getting swept at No. 15 Miami over the weekend. The Deacs defeated Charlotte 14-0 on Tuesday and dropped a 17-12 slugfest at Elon on Wednesday. The Hurricanes won all three games from Wake Forest, winning 7-4 on Friday, 9-8 in 11 innings on Saturday and 10-1 on Sunday.
The Demon Deacons are now 9-21 on the season and 2-10 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Wake Forest hit .289 as a team over the past week. Leading the way at the plate was junior centerfielder Steven Brooks, who hit .521 (11-for-21) with 10 runs scored, a home run, six RBIs and six stolen bases. Senior catcher Mike Murray went 7-for-15 on the week, hitting .467 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore infielder/outfielder Carlos Lopez hit .375 in the five games with a home run, five RBIs and five runs scored. Sophomore outfielder Mac Williamson hit a pair of home runs last week and hit .333 with six RBIs.
For the season, Murray leads the Demon Deacons offensively with a .355 batting average and a team-leading 25 RBIs. Murray has also hit three homers and six doubles. Brooks is batting .354 on the year, is tied for the team lead with four homers and has driven in 17 runs. Brooks is tied for the ACC lead with 17 stolen bases. Freshman infielder Matt Conway is batting .327 on the season with five RBIs.
The Wake Forest pitching staff posted a 7.68 earned run average over the week. Redshirt senior RHP Joel Ernst appeared in three games and tossed 5.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Freshman LHP Niko Spezial made two outings on the week with a 0-1 record and a 2.45 ERA in 3.2 innings of work. Sophomore RHP Gabe Feldman and redshirt junior RHP Ryan Bouton each tossed a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.
Freshman LHP Tim Cooney leads Wake Forest on the mound for the season with a 3-1 record and a 3.00 ERA. Cooney ranks 10th in the ACC in earned run average. Ernst has a 0-0 record with two saves and a 3.31 ERA in 15 appearances on the year. Ernst, who is tied for fourth in the league in appearances, has not allowed a run in his last eight outings. Spezial has a 1-4 record on the season with a 4.24 ERA in nine appearances, while senior LHP Alex Wiesner is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in four outings.
After playing eight of its last nine games on the road, Wake Forest returns home this week for four games. The Deacs host High Point on Wednesday at 6 p.m., before welcoming No. 4 Florida State this weekend. Game times against the Seminoles are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
