Men's Golf Ends Season At NCAA Regionals

ALPHARETTA, Ga. - The Wake Forest men's golf team needed a great round on Saturday to move into the top-5 and earn a spot in the NCAA Championships. Despite a good start, the Deacons just couldn't finish it off as they posted a 286 and finished ninth at 29-over par.
Wake got a pair of birdies from freshman Evan Beck and solid starts from the other four to make the turn Saturday at 1-under par. Coming into the day, the Deacs trailed BYU and South Alabama by six shots and had trimmed the advantage to just two at the turn.
The margin stayed around two midway through the second nine but a tough finish dropped the Deacs right back to where they started the day at six-shots off the pace.
"Coming into the day, we wanted a shot on the second nine and we had it but we just didn't have a good finish," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "The guys came out focused today and got off to a good start. It's just disappointing knowing that our season is over."
Oklahoma State won the event as the Cowboys finished the 54-holes at 1-over. Clemson took second with three solid rounds while Georgia Tech shot the round of the tournament on Saturday, posting an 8-under 272 to finish third at 5-over par.
Georgia Southern shot a 2-over 282 to move into a tie for fourth with Arizona State, which shot a 285 on Saturday. The two teams earned the final two qualifying spots as BYU finished a shot back after a 288 and South Alabama was three shots off the pace after a 290.
Beck led the Deacs on Saturday with a strong round of 1-under 69 and finished tied for 13th. That was the first sub-70 round for Beck this season as he made a total of three birdies. He also finished
The Virginia Beach, Va., native played extremely well at the end of the season. He was averaging 75.4 strokes per round heading into the ACC Championship last month but over the final six rounds, he 71.5 per round and five of his six rounds counted towards the team score.
Sophomore Lee Bedford carded a final round 72 to finish tied for 17th at 3-over par. In his eight tournaments this spring, Bedford finished no worse than tied for 17th including his first collegiate victory at the Wexford Intercollegiate.
Senior Brendan Gielow completed a tremendous senior season with a round of 1-over 71 on Saturday. After opening with a pair of 73s, the Byron Nelson Award finalist finished tied for 30th at 7-over par. Gielow finished the year with a total of seven top-10 finishes and a 71.9 stroke average.
Fellow senior Travis Wadkins also completed his last collegiate tournament this weekend. He posted a second-straight round of 76 on Saturday to finish tied for 69th. Wadkins finished the season with a 75.6 stroke average.
Sophomore Daniel Meggs finished off a tough week with a 74 on Saturday to finish 74th at 21-over par.
The Deacs finished the year with six top-5 finishes including a victory at the Wexford Intercollegiate and a third place finish at the ACC Championships.
