Complete 2010 Schedule
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Wake Forest field hockey head coach Jen Averill announced the team's 2010 schedule on Thursday. The Demon Deacons will play seven teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament last season and will also host the ACC Championships.
The schedule opens with familiar opponents in the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Deacs will take on Iowa on August 28, to start the year and then play Michigan one day later on August 29. North Carolina will be the host for the four team event.
The same four teams also met to open the season last year in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Ames, Iowa. Wake downed the Hawkeyes in the opener 3-2 and then dropped a tough 2-1 decision to Michigan.
After returning from Chapel Hill, Wake and defending national champion North Carolina will meet in Winston-Salem for the first of two regular season meetings on Sept. 3. That match will be followed by a non-conference tilt with Lafayette on Sept. 4.
After another non-conference matchup with a solid Longwood squad on Sept. 7, the Deacons will open ACC play at home against Duke on Saturday, Sept. 11. Wake Forest has won five of the last six meetings with the Blue Devils since 2005.
A non-conference road trip to nearby Davidson on Sept. 17, will be followed by a home match with Big Ten foe Ohio State. The Buckeyes went 13-7 last season and made its fifth ever trip to the NCAA Championships.
The Deacs then jump back into ACC-play with a home contest against two-time defending ACC Champion Maryland on Sept. 25. The Terrapins won both meetings with the Deacs last year and advanced all the way to the national championship match where they dropped a heartbreaker to North Carolina.
The Stanford Cardinal, another 2009 NCAA Tournament participant, will come cross-country for a match at Kentner Stadium on Sept. 27. Stanford enjoyed the best season in school history in 2009, finishing the year at 20-5 and making it to the NCAA Tournament for just the third time since 2000.
Wake will open the month of October with its second match against North Carolina, this time in Chapel Hill on Oct. 2. A day later, the Deacs welcome California to town for another non-conference tilt.
The following weekend brings a trip from Big Ten foe Michigan State. The Spartans advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals last year after claiming both the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles.
After hosting Radford in a midweek contest on Oct. 13, the Deacs will have ten days off to prepare for ACC-power Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. on Oct. 23. The Cavaliers pulled out a pair of narrow victories last season over the Deacs on their way to an NCAA semifinal appearance.
The next day, Wake will return home to renew its rivalry with Appalachian State. The two teams have faced each other every season since 1975, with the exception of 2008. Last year, the Deacons took a 6-0 decision from the Mountaineers.
A trip to Chestnut Hill, Mass., on Oct. 29, to face Boston College will close out the Deac's regular season. Wake has held the advantage over BC, winning the last five contests between the two schools, including a pair of victories a year ago.
After hosting the NCAA Championships in 2009, the Deacons will play host to the ACC Championships in 2010. The six-team tournament will begin at Kentner Stadium on Nov. 4, while the championship match is set for Sunday, Nov. 7.
The NCAA First and Second rounds are then set for the following weekend, Nov. 13-14, while the NCAA Championships this year will be in College Park, Md., on Nov. 19-21.
