WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Wake Forest University will not renew the contract of Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Annie Bennett as announced by Director of Athletics Ron Wellman on Friday.

The contracts of the assistant coaches will also not be renewed.

Bennett came to Wake Forest prior to the 1999-00 season as the head women's track and field coach and then became the Director of Track & Field following the 2001 season when the men's and women's programs merged. She also served as the director of cross country for the past 11 seasons.

The cross country programs finished in the top-six in each of her first five seasons, including an ACC title by the women in 2002, but combined for just one top-six team finish in the last four years.

On the track, the men's and women's teams under Bennett recorded just a combined six top-five finishes at the indoor and outdoor ACC Championships. Bennett coached a pair of national champions in Michelle Sikes during the 2007 outdoor season and Michael Bingham during the 2009 indoor campaign.

Bennett was a six-time All-American at the University of Texas where she also served as an assistant coach from 1992-94. She was the head coach at Stephen F. Austin from 1994-99 before coming to Wake Forest.

A nationwide search for a replacement will begin immediately.
