CHARLOTTE, NC - Wake Forest All-American Natalie Sheary and rising-sophomore Stephanie Kim both competed this week at the US Women's Amateur at the Charlotte Country Club in Charlotte, NC.
Sheary, who was playing in her fifth consecutive US Women's Amateur, advanced to the match play portion for the third-straight year while Kim missed out on the match play portion by one shot.
On Monday, Sheary opened stroke play with an even-par round of 72. At one point in the round, she had made three consecutive birdies and was 4-under par. On Tuesday, she carded a 1-over 73 and finished in a tie for 14th.
The top 64 players at the end of the 36-hole stroke play advanced to match play which began on Wednesday. The two-time All-American was the No. 18-seed in the match play and faced Aimee Neff of Michigan State in the first round.
Neff jumped out to a quick 3-up lead through five holes but Sheary battled back to win holes six, seven and eleven to square the match. A bogey by Sheary at No. 12 and another at No. 15 again gave Neff a 2-up lead. She had Sheary dormie with two holes to play but bogeyed the 17th to push the match to the final hole.
Sheary was unable to complete the comeback and Neff would take the match 2-up after a closing birdie. This was the third-straight year that the West Hartford, Conn., native advanced to match play but she has yet to win a match.
Kim carded a 75 in the opening round of stroke play and despite an even-par 35 on the final nine holes on Tuesday, her round of 77 left her one shot out of a playoff for the final match play spot.
The tournament will continue on Thursday with the second round of matches. The 36-hole final will take place on Sunday.
The Deacons will report to campus later this month and begin preparing for the NCAA Fall Preview at the Traditions Club in College Station, Texas, on Sept. 13-15.
