
Rae's Two Goals Lead No. 6 Wake to 3-1 Win Over Iowa in Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Two goals from Lizzie Rae helped Wake Forest to a 3-1 win over Iowa in the season opener at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge played in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Saturday.
Rae, a preseason All-ACC selection, scored the first two Wake Forest goals in the 39th and 49th minutes. Freshman Jess McFadyen scored the third Deacon goal in her collegiate debut, finding the net in the 54th minute. Lauren Greenwald, Faith Adams and Adelaide Knott recorded assists for Wake Forest.
Kaitlyn Ruhf played the entire game in goal for the Demon Deacons, making three saves and allowing one goal.
Danielle Peirson scored the lone Iowa goal in the 55th minute on a penalty corner, with Marike Stribos and Greena Lesiak assisting.
The Deacons dominated play for most of the game, outshooting the Hawkeyes 13-6. Each team had two penalty corners.
Rae led all players with four shots, and Liza Casella also had three shots for the Deacons. Jessica Barnett led Iowa with two shots.
The win was Wake Forest's third straight against Iowa, with the Demon Deacons now holding a 9-2 advantage in the all-time series.
Iowa's Jessica Barnett put a shot on goal in the 16th minute, but Ruhf was there to make the save for the Demon Deacons.
A Wake Forest penalty corner in the 23rd minute led to a shot by Casella that was saved Iowa's Kathleen McGraw. The follow-up attempt by Kerry Ergen was also saved.
Rae tested McGraw in the 28th minute, but the Hawkeye goalie again made the save to preserve the 0-0 scoreline.
The Demon Deacons had another penalty corner opportunity in the 30th minute, but McGraw saved the shot by Adams, and the first half ended in a scoreless tie.
Rae gave Wake Forest a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute when she took a pass from Greenwald and ripped a shot from the left-center of the circle into the right side of the goal.
In the 49th minute, Rae scored off of a penalty corner to double the Deacon advantage to 2-0, with Adams picking up the assist.
Freshman McFadyen scored in her Wake Forest debut to put the Deacons ahead 3-0 in the 54th minute, with Knott being credited with an assist on the play.
Iowa got a goal back a minute later on a penalty corner to make the score 3-1, with Peirson finished a play that was set up by Stribos and Lesiak.
The Demon Deacons will continue play in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge when they face Michigan on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Chapel Hill, N.C.
