WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team will play for the first time under new head coach Jeff Wyshner when it opens the season at the UVA Fall Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. this weekend. The entire team will make the trip to Virginia and compete in singles and doubles.

The Deacs return all but one starter from last year's squad, including All-ACC honoree Martina Pavelec, who was the recipient of the 2010 ITA Player to Watch award for the Carolina Region.

Wake will add one new player this fall in junior Kayla Duncan, a transfer from TCU. A Winston-Salem native, Duncan excelled in her two seasons as a Horned Frog, twice being named to the All-Mountain West Conference team. Last season, Duncan finished the year ranked No. 27 in the nation in doubles after reaching the second round of the 2010 NCAA Doubles Championships.

Wyshner begins his first season at the helm of the Deacons after coming to Wake Forest from Akron where he was the head women's tennis coach for four years. In 2009-10, he led the Zips to one of the best seasons in program history, as they posted a 19-3 overall record and finished second in the Mid-American Conference.

After this weekend's tournaments, the Demon Deacons will have a couple weeks of practice before they send representatives to the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships in Los Angeles, which runs from Oct. 2-10. Pavelec was selected to the qualifying singles draw, while Duncan was accepted into the prequalifying singles draw. The duo will also start play in the pre-qualifying doubles draw.
