WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Five Demon Deacons scored in double figures, led by Sandra Garcia's 21 points, and the Wake Forest women's basketball team routed Boston College 82-64 Monday evening at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
Point guards Brooke Thomas and Chelsea Douglas each scored 12 points, and Secily Ray and Lakevia Boykin chipped in 11 points apiece for the Deacons.
With the win, the Deacs improve to 11-12 (2-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) on the season, while the Eagles drop to 15-7 (2-5 ACC).
Boston College's Carolyn Swords led all players with 12 rebounds, in addition to totaling 17 points. Stefanie Murphy led the Eagles with 18 points on the night.
The Deacs turned in stellar performances on both the offensive and defensive ends, as they shot an outstanding 51.8 percent from the floor and held Boston College to 30 percent shooting. The Deacs forced 18 turnovers that they converted into 17 points, and they only committed 13 turnovers of their own while dishing out 17 assists. Thomas dished out a game-high six assists for the Deacs.
Boston College doubled-up Wake Forest 12-6 early-on as Murphy canned her first two threes of the night. Three points by Swords extended the lead to 15-6 but Garcia answered with a couple of buckets to help Wake close to within six at 17-11 at the 11:26 mark.
A lay-up by Ray and a mid-range jumper from Asia Williams trimmed the lead to three at 18-15 and three free throws by Brittany Waters at the 8:47 mark pulled Wake to within two at 20-18.
Waters' three-pointer on the next possession made the score 22-21 in the favor of the Eagles. Ray's driving lay-in one possession later completed the comeback and gave the Deacs' their first lead of the night at 23-22 with 7:31 to play in the half.
Behind the combination of solid defense and five-straight points from Douglas, Wake built a four-point lead at 28-24 with just over five minutes to play. The Deacs took a nine point lead into the break at 42-33, and they would continue to add to that lead in the second half.
Wake Forest went on a 23-6 run from the conclusion of the first half into the midway point of the second half. Boykin nailed a pair of back-to-back lay-ups to put the Deacs up 60-39 with 11 minutes remaining.
The Deacs went on a mini 13-0 run over a three minute spurt, before Swords scored on a lay-up at the ten minute mark to stop the streak. The Deacs enjoyed their largest lead of the game, 25points, at the 9:34 mark.
The Eagles went on a run of their own late in the second half with a couple of back-to-back baskets from Murphy to cut the lead to 72-56, but Garcia responded with a lay-up and then a three point basket on Wake Forest's next two possessions to seal the victory for the Deacs.
Wake Forest will return to the court Thursday evening at Virginia in a 7 p.m. contest with the Cavaliers.
