WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's golf team will look to keep its momentum rolling this weekend at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Blackthorn Club. The 54-hole event opens on Friday, Oct. 14, and runs through Sunday, Oct. 16.
The Demon Deacons are coming off a solid third place showing at the Rees Jones Invitational less than two weeks ago.
Head coach Jerry Haas will have senior Lee Bedford and junior Evan Beck at the top of his lineup while junior Charlie Harrison and sophomore Thomas Birdsey will occupy the No.3 and No. 4 spots. A pair of freshmen will round out the lineup as Cyrus Stewart will play in the No. 5 spot and Brandon Ng will compete as an individual.
At the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, the Deacons' success has been limited the individual side. In the last 13 years, a Wake Forest individual has finished in the top-5 eight times, including back-to-back victories by Bill Haas in 2002 and 2003. More recently, the Deacs have had an individual finish in the top-5 in three of the last four years.
As a team however, the Deacons won the event in 2002 with three top-10 finishers, but have only finished in the top-5 five times in 13 tries. Wake will be looking to on last year's success as the team finished in a tie for fourth at 3-over par.
Last year, Bedford led the way as he shook off an uncharacteristic opening round 81 and would play the final 36-holes bogey-free en route to shooting rounds of 67-65. Bedford finished tied for 10th. Beck also had a solid showing, finishing tied for 12th at 1-under par.
Harrison has played well this fall and is coming into the weekend off a pair of top-10 finishes. He fired three under-par rounds at the VCU Shootout and finished tied for sixth and then followed that with a pair of 72s at the Rees Jones Invitational and would finish tied for 10th.
Birdsey has had a bit of an up-and-down start to his Demon Deacon career. He fired his first under-par round as a Deac with a 71 in the second round of the VCU Shootout and then capped the Rees Jones Invitational with a solid round of 72. Birdsey posted his first top-10 finish at the Rees Jones event.
Stewart will be making his Demon Deacon debut this week while Ng will be making his second appearance this fall. Ng fired a couple of solid rounds at the VCU Shootout in his debut last month.
Wake Forest will be joined in the field by Army, Clemson, host East Tennessee State, Kent State, Louisville, Memphis, Missouri, NC State, Tennessee, Toledo, UNC Wilmington, Villanova, Virginia and Virginia Tech.
The weather forecast looks favorable for the weekend in Johnson City, Tenn. Light rain will be moving out of the area by Friday afternoon and temperatures are expected in the high-60s and low-70s all weekend.
Golfstat.com will have live scoring of all three rounds of the event. Check back to WakeForestSports.com for a complete recap at the end of each day.
